We are looking for an enthusiastic and ambitious English Teacher who is knowledgeable and passionate about their subject
Our English Department are looking for an enthusiastic, highly motivated English Teacher with a love for their subject to join a great team. There are currently nine specialist teachers who enjoy a range of traditional and progressive teaching methodology, and contributing to the academic and pastoral life of the school.

The English Department is a strong department which consistently achieves good outcomes. It is a well-resourced area; situated at the heart of the main school building. Cove School work closely with a number of county and national projects focused on developing curriculum wide literacy and oracy skills.We have a dedicated literacy and oracy team that work across the school. We have various reading programmes such as ‘Thinking Reading’ and a whole school tutor reading programme. The English department run excellent trips for GCSE students such as ‘Poetry Live’ and also run Shakespeare workshops for KS3 students in school with a West End production team.
As part of a whole school oracy drive, last year we began a debating club, some of whom have the opportunity to train with the England debate team.
We are looking to appoint a colleague who will:
- Engage, enthuse, motivate and challenge students in order for them to excel academically
- Have relentlessly high expectations of themselves and students
- Have excellent subject knowledge
- Be willing to teach across the full age range of students; year 7 to year 11
- Enhance the quality of teaching and learning in the Department and wider school through sharing resources and good practice, lesson observation, collaborative teaching, mentoring and active participation in continuing professional studies programme
- Teach a standard timetable allocation
- Make a positive contribution to the efficient running of the Department, including, setting and marking examinations, attending departmental meetings and undertaking administrative and other tasks as delegated by the Head of Department
- Actively safeguard and promote the welfare of children
- Support the schools’ aims and objectives for teaching and learning
- Adhere to and promote all school policies and procedures
Person Specification:
- Good degree in a directly related subject (desirable)
- Thorough knowledge of the (11-16) subject Curriculum up to GCSE
- Recognised teaching qualification, such as a PGCE, or equivalent experience
- Awareness of Safeguarding requirements and good practice
- Good level of IT literacy
- Be capable of delivering inspirational and informative lessons to the full age and ability range of pupils at the school
- Be able to demonstrate a positive and authoritative rapport with students
- Excellent and effective classroom management skills
- Have excellent communication skills to enable effective dialogue with pupils, parents, staff and visitors
- Be organised and self-motivated, with a proven record for meeting targets and deadlines
- A good sense of humour
