Perinatal Peer Support Worker | East London NHS Foundation Trust
The role of Perinatal Peer Support Worker has been developed specifically for people who have lived experience of using perinatal mental health health services. Through sharing their own experiences, Peer Support Workers will inspire hope and belief that recovery is possible in others.
The post holder will provide formalised peer support and practical assistance to service users in order for them to regain control over their lives and their own unique recovery process. Within a relationship of mutuality and information sharing, they will promote choice, self-determination and opportunities for the fulfilment of personally valued roles and connection to local communities.
The post holder will work in partnership with stakeholders across the health and care system, such as GPs, mental health services, service user and carer experts-by-experience, and third sector/Voluntary, Community and Social Enterprise (VCSE) organisations to co-produce and co-deliver services
They will also contribute to service development and the development of peer support within the Borough and Trust. They will bring unique, valuable insights and perspectives gained through their lived experience and advocate for the voice of the service user.
To work as an integral and highly valued member of the Multi-Disciplinary Team in facilitating and leading patient-centred activities which inspire hope, control and opportunity for service users.- To support individuals in identifying personal recovery goals to improve their quality of life and to support them to do the things they want to do and live the life they want to lead.
- Through sharing aspects of own lived experience of mental health challenges and of accessing services the Peer Support Worker will inspire hope and belief that recovery is possible in others.
- The Peer Support Worker will act as an ambassador of Recovery with other Trust Recovery champions working with external agencies and partner organisations.

To provide support to service users in the community and maintain relationships and contact with them if they are an in-patient.
To act as a role model to service users to inspire hope, share life experiences and demonstrate coping strategies, and share experiences of recovery.
To co-facilitate peer recovery and other recovery-focused groups in partnership with members of staff.
To positively promote and support independent living for service users in the community by maintaining an extensive knowledge and links with community resources and actively supporting service users to access them e.g. in relation to employment, leisure, motherhood and citizenship.
To support allocated service users, to prepare for meetings regarding their care i.e. consultants meeting, CPA planning, pre-birth planning meetings and reviews.
To attend necessary staff/clinical meetings and champion a recovery and holistic approach to care for all discussed service users.
To feedback activities with service users to the team
To report any untoward incidents or unusual occurrences to the senior staff member/ service manager immediately.
To adhere to the Peer Support Worker Code of ethics
Use a range of communication skills to ensure service users are engaged in a meaningful way.
Provide effective means of communication with staff in line with the philosophy of Recovery.
To build and maintainpositive and empathic relationships, which result in positive outcome for service users and aids their Recovery.
To communicate with service users and the team with optimism and enthusiasm whilst being sensitive to the complex and diverse needs of the clients.
To work in accordance withthe Trust’s Information Sharing Policy and Data Protection Act, ensuring that all written and electronically stored information is accessible only toauthorisedpersonnel.
To assistservice users to integrate into the service and local area and support them to access information on health promotion, mental and physical wellbeing, as well as services for their baby
Tomonitorthe service user's progress and report areas of concern to the multi-disciplinary team (verbally & onRiO).
Toassistthe service user to understand their rights and choices within the service.
Report any untoward incidents or unusual occurrences to the manager/senior clinicianimmediately.
Awareness of the standards of professional behavior expected within the service by the Trust.
Awareness andabilityto implement Peer support worker boundaries.
An understanding andappropriate applicationof policies and procedures.
Fulfilment of all identified mandatory and statutory identified training needs in order to achieve Trust objectives and specific Local objectives.
To understand and acknowledge therightof those patients who use Mental Health Servicesin accordance withthe Policies and procedures of the Trust and the Mental Health Act Code of Practice.
Ensure compliance with Health and Safety regulations (Health and Safety at Work Act, Infection Control Policy etc.) and that requirements are fullycomplied within line with the guidance and instruction of the Matron.
Work in collaboration with the ward team in order to maintain environmental integrity and safety.
Contribute to the Quality Improvement (QI) work of the service.- Awareness of the standards of professional behavior expected within the service by the Trust.
