Job overview

Applications are invited for a full-time Specialty Doctor in Urology appointment within the Norfolk and Waveney Urology service in response to service requirements, providing care across three Acute Trusts. The main base for this post will be at NNUH, Norwich.

A candidate who is unable for personal reasons to undertake the duties of a whole-time post will receive equal consideration. If such a candidate is appointed the job content will be modified as appropriate in consultation with consultant colleagues and local management.

Main duties of the job

Principle Job Purpose: To work in close association with the Consultant Urologists and associated specialties to provide a comprehensive general urological service at the NNUH

Main Duties and Responsibilities: Clinical

To provide management of in-patients and out-patients for elective and emergency cases.
To help reduce waiting lists in both out-patient and operating lists.

To contribute to meeting the Surgical Divisions objectives.

Organisational

To undertake appropriate projects and administration as required by the department.

Clinical Governance

To provide clinical services in line with the Trust’s clinical governance arrangements which are designed to ensure that agreed quality standards are achieved. These requirements include:

  • Continuous Professional Development
  • Risk Management
  • Revalidation

Other Responsibilities

Subject to the provisions of the Terms and Conditions of Service to observe the Trust’s agreed policies and procedures drawn up in consultation with the profession on clinical matters and to follow the standing orders and financial instructions of the Trust.

To observe local and national employment and personnel policies and procedures, and to comply with Regional and Trust Health and Safety policies.

To assume responsibility for and facilitate contact from members of staff with delegated duties for personally accountable patient care.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MBBS or equivalent
  • MRCS
  • Full GMC Registration
Desirable criteria
  • FRCS Urol

Aptitudes

Essential criteria
  • Commitment to high quality urological service.
  • Excellent communication skills – oral and written.
  • Capable of working in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Energy and enthusiasm and the ability to work under extreme pressure.
  • Enthusiasm for service development and teaching.
Desirable criteria
  • Previous responsibility for service improvement.
  • Management skills
  • Independence in Core Diagnostic and Therapeutic Urology procedures.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Applicants who are Nationals from another European country or elsewhere overseas would have to show equivalence to the 5 years training period in the National Health Service required for the specialty.
  • Training and expertise in children’s safeguarding
  • Previous operative experience is required including flexible cystoscopies
  • A wide experience of in-patient and out-patient medical treatment of specific Urological conditions as well as the management of urological Emergencies in an on-call setting is essential
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in research or published papers in area of special interest

Circumstances

Essential criteria
  • Flexible outlook on working hours.
  • Must live within a 15-mile radius of the base Trust or 30 minutes travelling time.
  • Ability to travel across multi-sites whilst public transport may not be available.

Communications and Language Skills

Essential criteria
  • Ability to communicate effectively with clinical colleagues, colleagues in pathology and support staff
  • Ability to present effectively to an audience, using a variety of methods, and to respond to questions and queries
Desirable criteria
  • Good presentation skills.

Travelling to work

Staff parking is available onsite; however, this is limited during core working hours. We have more capacity in the evening and at weekends and can usually provide spaces during those hours.

We look to allocate these spaces fairly. Our Travel Office have a set of criteria that staff must meet in order to qualify. If you qualify for a space, you may be placed on a waiting list if we are at full capacity.

The NNUH is served by a number of public buses, and we offer generously discounted monthly passes with First Bus & Konect.

The Costessey Park and Ride runs regularly each day from 06:30 (from P&R) to 20:45 (from NNUH) and this service is free for NHS staff. There is a regular Thickthorn P&R service as well which is free. Applications to the Travel Office are required for this service.

We also have a discounted service from the airport P&R if you purchase a bundle. Please see Konect website for further details.

The NNUH host multiple bicycle racks and a salary sacrifice scheme. We also benefit from a Beryl station onsite.

DBS
