We are excited to be taking applications for the Head of English & EAL position, to start in August 2026.
This is a key middle leadership role, leading a team of several staff and ensuring consistently high standards of teaching, learning, and outcomes across English Language, English Literature, and EAL. The role leads the delivery and development of the cambridge curriculum up to IGCSE and A Level, ensuring students are challenged, supported, and inspired to achieve their full potential in both.Alongside this, the Head of EAL ensures that provision for learners of English as an Additional Language is structured, inclusive, and effective in removing barriers to learning.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide leadership and direction for English and EAL provision across the school.
- Lead, manage, and develop a team of staff across English and EAL, including coaching, appraisal, and professional development.
- Design and oversee a coherent English curriculum up to IGCSE and A Level (Cambridge curriculum).
- Develop and maintain a structured and effective EAL provision with clear pathways for entry, support, and exit.
- Ensure high standards of teaching and learning, modelling excellent classroom practice.
- Monitor pupil progress and use data to drive intervention and raise attainment at IGCSE and A Level.
- Lead on EAL assessment, tracking, and reporting of English language proficiency.
- Promote whole-school literacy, including reading, writing, and oracy.
- Work with Admissions and senior leaders to support effective induction and transition for EAL learners.
- Maintain a teaching commitment in English, including at IGCSE and/or A Level.
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL HAVE:
- A degree in English or a related subject, along with substantial teaching experience in English and/or EAL.
- Experience teaching English at IGCSE and/or A Level (Cambridge curriculum highly desirable).
- Experience of leadership or curriculum responsibility within English and/or EAL.
- Strong subject knowledge of English language and literature with the ability to inspire a love of reading and writing.
- A strong understanding of EAL pedagogy and language acquisition.
- Excellent data literacy with the ability to use assessment information to improve outcomes.
- Proven ability to lead, manage, and develop staff effectively.
- Strong organisational and communication skills.
- A commitment to safeguarding, inclusion, and whole-school improvement.
