This will be a full-time, substantive Specialty Doctor post in Ophthalmology. The role will deliver clinical activity across several subspecialties within Ophthalmology. There will be opportunities to become more deeply involved in specific areas of interest with evidence of appropriate aptitude.

The post will assist the department to deliver the required access times for patients.

The department has a proven track record of supporting and encouraging specialty doctors to gain experience in a variety of ophthalmic sub-specialties including an opportunity to train in Phaco cataract surgery and possibly gain experience to have access to GMS Specialist register through CESR.

The principal role of the post-holder is to be an active member of the clinical team undertaking outpatient and acute access clinics across a variety of subspecialties within Ophthalmology including medical retina, glaucoma, neuro-ophthalmology, anterior segment, vitreo-retinal and eye casualty.
  • To provide high quality ophthalmic assessment, treatment and management for service users.
  • To provide clinical activity that is efficient to optimise access times for patients.
  • To deal with clinical queries that arise from personal clinical activity and that of peers.
  • To be aware of clinical governance and clinical risk management and take an active role in their implementation.
  • To contribute to the learning experience of Specialty Registrar Trainees within the department as well as teaching and training medical and other students as well as other members of the MDT.
  • To work seamlessly and respectfully as part of the wider team involving other Trust Specialties, nursing, technicians, allied health professions, administrative and theatre staff.
  • To contribute to academic, audit and clinical governance issues within the department and the Trust.
  • To organise their workload in a manner that is consistent with good practice as laid out in the Trust's Policy for Management of Waiting Lists and Times.

The job plan for the role is:

  • 8 PA fixed clinical sessions
  • 1 PA for administrative duties
  • 1 PA for Supported Professional Activity
  • 4% uplift for on-call duties

The job plan will be reviewed annually.

In addition to the duties and responsibilities listed, the jobholder may be required to perform other duties assigned by the supervisor/manager from time to time.
