Locum Consultant in Clinical Oncology - Breast
Job overview
The post holder will be responsible for the clinical oncology management of patients from RM, Kingston hospital and St Georges Hospital in collaboration with other consultant colleagues. Patients receive treatment on the RM Chelsea site.
The key aim of this post will be to support the Breast Unit working with the existing Consultant team to deliver a high-quality clinical service to patients with breast cancers with a workload of 300 new radiotherapy patients per annum. The post holder will make a major contribution to the Unit’s programs of research including the development and implementation of new radiotherapy techniques as well as support for current and future clinical trials in this area.
The post holder will be employed by The Royal Marsden Hospital. The job planning process will be carried out in partnership with the employer and employee. The post holder will report to the Clinical Lead for the Breast Unit and be managed within the Division of Cancer Services.
The post holder will participate in the consultant oncology on call rota which is approximately 1 in 20.
Main duties of the job- To provide advice on clinical oncology aspects of treatment and care for colleagues in other specialties within The Royal Marsden.
- To participate in and support the multidisciplinary care team which includes Medical Oncologists, Clinical Oncologists, Surgeons, the relevant junior team, Specialist Nursing Staff, Therapists, Dietician, Social worker, Palliative Care and Counselling for patients and families.
- The post holder will be expected to participate fully in Peer Review and audit.
- The post holder will contribute to the development of the departmental objectives and business plan and would manage resources within the approved plan. The consultant would be part of the Cancer Services Division and would be accountable to the Divisional Medical Director.
- The post holder will be expected to work closely with consultant colleagues in other oncology services in South West London and RM Partners and participate in related meetings
- To work within the department to seek ways of improving the efficiency of the service without sacrificing quality.
- To contribute to the risk management of the department and contribute the development and maintenance of best clinical practice through Clinical Governance.
- The post holder will be expected to liaise with his/her consultant colleagues in providing internal cover for annual leave and sick leave and under exceptional circumstances this may require some flexibility in the post holder’s hours.

Essential criteria- Eligible for full GMC registration
- CCT in Clinical Oncology or equivalent
- MRCP and FRCR or equivalent
- Higher Research Degree
Experience
Essential criteria- A broad-based experience in radiotherapy
- A relevant interest in clinical research
- Experience in advanced radiotherapy techniques for breast tumours
- Evidence of scientific publications in clinical oncology
- A relevant interest in medical education

At The Royal Marsden we have an immune compromised patient population who we must protect as much as we can against the flu virus. Each year, seasonal flu affects thousands of people in the UK. Occurring mainly in winter, it is an infectious respiratory disease capable of producing symptoms ranging from those similar to a common cold, through to very severe or even fatal disease.
The wellbeing of our staff and patients is of the upmost importance to us, and it is the expectation of The Royal Marsden that all patient-facing staff have an annual flu vaccination, provided free of charge by the Trust.
