The Virology ISO:15189 accredited Hub laboratory at St Peter’s Hospital, Chertsey (Berkshire Surrey Pathology Services (BSPS), has a vacancy for a Secretary to work in the laboratory. BSPS is a successful, progressive pathology network formed as a contractual joint venture between 5 trusts providing services to acute Trusts, primary and community care and private healthcare.The laboratory has recently implemented new state of the art automation. This is a part time post of 22.5 hours and we are happy to offer school hours (4.5 hours a day for 5 week days) or consolidate to 7.5 hours a day for 3 days. Hours can be discussed at interview.
We are looking for an energetic, enthusiastic and well-motivated candidate with appropriate qualifications and/or relevant experience to join the team of the Virology department for Berkshire and Surrey Pathology Services (BSPS). We are looking for a candidate who has secretarial/administrative experience and knowledge of medical/pathological terminologies would be beneficial.
Main duties of the job
Main duties of the job will include:
Working closely with the Lead and Senior Biomedical Scientists in Virology to provide a comprehensive secretarial and administration service to the Virology Department
To provide full secretarial support to the Virology Department including all aspects of administrative and clerical duties.
To provide a fast, accurate typing service, including audio typing to meet the departmental standards of work
To assist in the preparation of standard operating procedures and other laboratory documentation and to ensure that it is recorded on the document control system

In summary:
To take formal minutes of meetings as required
To provide general secretarial support for all aspects of the Virology Laboratory administration and assist in the development of clinical and laboratory protocols
To troubleshoot simple computer problems
To deal with telephone enquiries
To prioritise workload, dealing with interruptions and demands for urgently required support as necessary
To check and reconcile invoices for work sent to reference laboratories, keeping records as appropriate
To print and enter reports from referral laboratories

Qualifications and Further Training
Essential criteria- • GCSE or equivalent to a standard that demonstrates excellent literacy and numeracy (e.g. Maths and English).
- Recognised qualification NVQ2 or equivalent training and experience.
- IT qualification
Experience
Essential criteria- Working in a busy office, Prioritising workload, An understanding of confidentiality
- Secretarial experience within the Health Service.
- Audio typing of documents.
Knowledge
Essential criteria- NHS Constitution, Trust vision, values, strategic objectives and key work programmes
- Medical Terminology
Skills
