What is the purpose of this job?

You will be providing effective governance for RDG members through the administration of an industry scheme for energy procurement (EC4T), as well as promoting and supporting the development of long-term strategy and policy initiatives. This role will support RDG members and stakeholders with their efficiency and sustainability commitments and, as an established green mode of transport, enable rail to grow and secure further investment.

This role is expected to deliver extensive engagement with senior management throughout the rail industry and with wider industry stakeholders.

What can I expect to do in this job?

Whilst not an exhaustive list below provides some of the activities for the role
  1. Accountable for the governance of the industry energy procurement strategy through the Electricity Current for Traction (EC4T) Scheme Council and agree objectives as part of the annual planning process of energy purchase for operators.
  2. Work alongside the Railway Strategy & Planning team to align RDG activity with the wider industry including Planning Oversight Group (POG) and Technical Leadership Group (TLG).
  3. Monitor and analyse energy and environmental data, establish performance metrics, and report on progress to senior management, staying up to date with industry trends and best practices.
  4. Respond to industry consultations working alongside RDG colleagues and industry stakeholders.
  5. Responsible for preparing and monitoring the energy procurement and sustainability elements of the team budget, working closely with the Sustainability Manager
  6. Represent the Head of Railway Strategy & Policy as required, both internally and externally at high-level industry meetings relevant to the role.
  7. Provide expertise to whole-industry campaigns, supporting operators with their efficiency and sustainability obligations and representing RDG at relevant industry working groups.
  8. Work collaboratively with the wider Railway Strategy & Policy team to develop evidence-based policies, working jointly with government departments and RDG members on wider reform.
  9. Provide opportunities, such as discussion forums and events, for cross-industry sharing of best practise and collaboration.

  • TOCs, FOCs and Owning Groups through the appropriate RDG governance.
  • EC4T Scheme Council and Schneider Electric (consultants for RDG)
  • Network Rail, GBRTT, Rail Partners, ORR and ROSCOs.
  • DfT, Transport Scotland, Transport for Wales and Sub-National Transport Bodies.
  • RSSB on issues relating to sustainability and decarbonisation.
  • RIA on supply chain engagement and planning.

Requirements

What experience, skills and knowledge do I need?
  • Bachelor's degree (or Masters) ideally in Energy or Environmental Science
  • Proven experience in developing and implementing energy and sustainability strategies (ideally in transport)
  • Strong numeracy skills
  • Knowledge of environmental regulations, industry standards, and best practices
  • Understanding or experience of long-term railway planning, funding and investment
  • Understanding or experience of the regulatory and long-term planning processes in GB rail
