Hours per week: 37 Monday – Friday, 8.30am to 5pm
Role Length: This opening assignment is for 6 months

Alongside remote working, there is an expectation that the postholder will attend committee meetings and Court hearings as required, including as advocate. We anticipate this being no more than once a month.

The Litigation and Planning team is seeking an experienced planning and highways lawyer. In addition to supporting Devon County Council, you will also support two National Park authorities.

They will manage a varied caseload including planning and enforcement advice, remote planning committee attendance and governance support, preparing planning agreements and advising on various aspects of highways and planning law. You will also be expected to offer some supervision to junior members of the team.

Qualifications:

Educated to degree level.

Law Society admitted and Solicitor Regulatory Authority registered solicitor, Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives or Bar Standards Board registered barrister.

Skills & Experience:

Minimum of 12 months recent experience in a similar role or context and ideally within a public sector organisation.
Experience of planning and highway law is essential.
Adequate experience of managing own workload.
A thorough knowledge of that area of law, good advocacy skills and considerable experience in case management is essential along with demonstrable experience of working in a particular field.
Ability to absorb and interpret legislation, case law and procedures.
Ability to assimilate facts and present these in a coherent fashion in order to facilitate desired result for DCC. It is important to note the impact of incorrect advice and poor advocacy could be financially very significant.
Ability to assimilate detailed and complex information and make judgments on the way that certain procedures have been followed.
Excellent communication and presentational skills both verbal and written including influencing and persuasion.

Strong IT skills including Microsoft packages or equivalent (e.g. G Suite, Adobe Pro).
