The Physical Oceanography Research Group in the School of Ocean and Earth Science at the University of Southampton is looking to recruit a Research Fellow with interest in how the ocean and climate system is changing, to join a major new project, ‘Interacting ice Sheet and Ocean Tipping - Indicators, Processes, Impacts and Challenges’ (ISOTIPIC).

ISOTIPIC brings together experts in climate dynamics, physical oceanography and the cryosphere, to transform our understanding of tipping points associated with the oceans and ice sheets, and potential impacts on global climate and society.

You will have, or will be close to completing, a PhD, ideally in the area of oceanography or climate science, with extensive experience in the analysis of observations and models. The successful candidate will work in close collaboration with researchers at the National Oceanography Centre to analyse simulated interplay between tipping points involving the Greenland Ice Sheet and the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation, and potential early warning indicators of an approaching tipping point.

Further collaboration with researchers at the National Centre for Atmospheric Science will involve analysis of climate model simulations to address associated teleconnections, feedbacks and impacts, with a focus on regional sea level change.

Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
