Job overview
This advanced specialist speech and language therapist (SLT) will have considerable experience in clinical voice disorders and counselling skills/psychological approaches, as well as established competencies and experience in delivering trans and gender diverse voice and communication therapy (vis a vis the Competency Framework RCSLT, 2018).They will work as a gender specialist SLT and independently manage a caseload of trans and gender diverse service users in the delivery of high-quality voice exploration and modification therapy.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will:
- Deliver the highest quality, compassionate, trans-affirmative, effective care to trans and non-binary service users
- Carry out initial appointment and therapy for trans and non-binary service users (including some complex cases) in individual, group and workshop voice and communication therapy sessions, in liaison with Lead Consultant SLT
- Contribute to multi-disciplinary team working, case discussion and CPD sessions.
- Clinically supervise junior SLT team members as required in liaison with the Lead Consultant SLT
- Contribute to training within the GIC MDT and SLT team in liaison with the Lead Consultant SLT
- Be placement educator coordinator for student SLT clinical placements in liaison with the Lead Consultant SLT
- Contribute to service delivery developments in liaison with the Lead Consultant, Principal and Advanced SLTs team members.

THE GIC SPEECH AND LANGAUGE THERAPY (SLT) SERVICE:
The Gender Identity Clinic (GIC), historically known as the ‘Charing Cross GIC’, is the oldest and largest gender specialist centre in the UK. The GIC diagnoses and treats adults with gender dysphoria in a biopsychosocial care pathway involving psychiatrists, psychologists, endocrinologists, specialist nurses, specialist medical practitioners, specialist speech and language therapists.Within this multidisciplinary team, the SLT service aims to support service users to find and sustain their authentic voice which fits with their sense of self. This is delivered through introductory workshops, initial assessment appointments, individual and group therapy programmes, and specific workshops (e.g. the singing voice). The service leads on protocol development, cutting edge research and training of established and developing specialists’ speech and language therapists in the field.

Qualifications
Essential criteria- Recognised Speech and Language Therapy qualification
- HCPC Registration and License to Practice
- Certified Member of Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists
- Evidence of successful completion and portfolio of advanced and short courses in clinical voice assessment and therapy, counselling skills and vocal skills development
- Member of relevant RSCLT Clinical Excellence Networks
- Certificate or equivalent in counselling skills; some evidenced study (reading log/CPD attendance certificate) in other therapeutic supportive approaches (e.g. Solution Focused Brief Therapy, Mindfulness)
- Member of British Association of Gender Identity Specialists (BAGIS)
Experience
Essential criteria- Significant developing experience in clinical voice and trans voice and communication therapy (minimum 3 years)
- Significant experience MDT working
- Experience as placement educator and supervising junior SLTs
- Significant and ongoing personal experiential voice development
- Developing experience in trans voice and clinical voice
- Experience of MDT working
- Qualification in voice coaching and pedagogy
Knowledge and Skills
Essential criteria- Highly specialist knowledge of and skills in a wide range of therapeutic models and evidence base in clinical voice disorders and voice and communication therapy and vocal pedagogy – especially in pitch, resonance, intonation and voice quality
- Knowledge of counselling and psychological approaches (e.g. Rogerian Person-centred, CBT, SFBT, Mindfulness, Narrative Therapy)
- Knowledge of relevant international and Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists professional and clinical guidelines
