Job overview
The post holder is responsible for the strategic and operational leadership for the mental health agenda across Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust; supporting the Trust to further develop a culture that recognises and promotes parity of esteem for all patients.
The post holder will lead on the development and implementation of a Mental Health strategy for the organisation which aligns with national, regional and local priorities and which supports improvements in patient care and experience through system working and staff development.
The post holder is accountable and responsible for the strategic development, leadership and management of the organisation's mental health agenda, providing advice and leadership to the clinical teams and quality improvement agenda. This will include designing and implementing initiatives/ projects to enhance the quality of care, experience and safety for people attending the Trust with combined physical and mental health needs across both adult and children’s services.
Main duties of the job
Lead the development and delivery of the Trust’s strategy for mental health services ensuring compliance with relevant regulatory, legal frameworks and relevant national guidance.
Act as a subject matter expert and practice at an advanced level regarding the care of patients with mental illness, including legal aspects to detention, patient and environmental assessments, treatment, restraint and discharge.
Lead change management programmes related to mental health services within the trust.
Maintain own clinical development by keeping abreast of new interventions, treatments and technologies within acute and mental health care
Strategy & Policy Development
Lead on the development and implementation of a Mental Health strategy for the organisation which aligns with national, regional and local priorities and which supports improvements in patient care and experience through system working and staff development.
To ensure the timely development of policies, which reflect national guidance, regulatory and legal frameworks, are evidence- based and which are accessible to staff from all professional backgrounds. Ensure regularly reviewed to ensure they remain fit for purpose.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
A combination of sitting, standing and walking.
Requirement for potential physical effort during the course of the working day. Travel to external meetings and across site.
Use of multiple IT systems, including external systems where confidential mental health information is stored.
Occasionally exposure face to face with patients and their families who are hostile, verbally or physically aggressive.
Mental Effort:
The post holder is required to exhibit a level of concentration for analysis, writing reports and training sessions.
The post holder is required to frequently respond actively to challenges within the clinical settings as required.
Emotional Effort:
Occasional exposure to distressing circumstances and complex patient groups, including working in clinical practice with staff in challenging situations.
Respond to serious and emergency incidents.

Training & Qualifications
Essential criteria- NMC Registered Mental Health Nurse (RMN) with First degree in Nursing or equivalent. Or Social Worker registered with Social Work England with degree in social work or equivalent and evidence of practical application of expertise.
- Master’s level education (or equivalent experience)
- Evidence of ongoing professional development and attendance at relevant conferences
- Evidence of sustained and continuous professional development
- Commitment to ongoing learning and personal development
- Post registration qualifications relevant to role Service/quality improvement qualification/experience.
- Qualified AMHP
Experience

- Experience of developing policy, strategy and writing board level papers
- Experience of managing teams and individuals, including completion of PDRs, performance, sickness and capability management
- Experience of delivering mental health care in an acute care setting
- Extensive experience of adult mental health care
- Experience of child and adolescent mental health services
- Knowledge of the legal aspects of detention, restraint and mental capacity
- Experience of implementing change to support improved patient experience, patient care and improving use of resources partners
- Experience of empowering teams to lead and implement change
