There are two vacancies. Both will support Area local operations teams in :

A– NorthEast & Yorkshire B– Thames & Solent and SouthDowns.

You will be:
  • Part of a team of Area Sustainable Business Partners (ASBPs) who work with Areas, the wider Sustainable Business team (SBT) and others, to deliver the commitments of eMission– our internal sustainability strategy. As we become a truly sustainable business, you will support Area Local Operations Teams to develop and deliver their own sustainability plans, within our wider organisational framework.
  • Supporting Areas in development and delivery of optimal sustainability approaches. Reviewing sustainability processes and procedures relating to Local Operations. Facilitating the commissioning and delivery of relevant initiatives.
  • Partnering and advocating with Areas to ensure they deliver eMission commitments, and internal and external best practice/learning is shared.
  • Signposting Area sustainability leads, and leadership teams to access technical expertise within SBT, who set the standards for the organisation against our eMission themes of net zero, circular economy, nature and social equity.
  • Driving, developing, and delivering excellent eMission communication and engagement across Areas, particularly but not exclusively with respect to Area progress, issues and opportunities.
  • Regularly working with other colleagues in SBT on behalf of the ASBPteam, to link into work within the wider team. Future possibilities for similar portfolio lead roles outside the team..
  • Ensuring sustainability legislative and compliance sustainability risks and obligations in Areas are understood and mitigated, including those of our Environment Management Systems. Ensuring sustainability decisions are aligned with EA and Defra strategies, and eMission ambitions.
  • Utilising and evolving Area sustainability data, insight and evidence. Reporting progress and the narrative against eMission roadmaps.

The team

Sustainable Business is part of the Strategy, Transformation Assurance Directorate. Providing organisational sustainability leadership through our corporate sustainability strategy ‘eMission2030’ encompassing delivery of our ambition to become a netzero organisation by 2045-50, transitioning to a circular economy, becoming a nature positive organisation and contributing to an equitable society.

We deliver through collaborative action planning, setting sustainability standards and guidance, technical thoughtleadership, reporting and developing tools to support colleagues across the EA, Defra and supply chain.

Experience/skills required

The generic requirements are set out in the Grade 5 Business Services job profile. The key competencies for this role are:
  • Experience in influencing and persuading stakeholders, at all working levels.
  • Experience of effective delivery through and with others, utilising excellent engagement, networking and relationship building skills.
  • Experience in developing and enhancing local business partnerships, within the EA or within similar large, complex, organisations.
  • Ability to work independently and consistently at pace, and to effectively integrate national policy aims with local and regional Area priorities, to achieve high impact delivery.
  • Sustainability knowledge
  • Relevant qualifications and/or professional memberships preferred.
  • Regulatory experience would be helpful but not essential
