Job Title: Biomedical Scientist (Band 6) - Microbiology (Bacteriology)
Department: Microbiology
Location: South Tees hospitals NHS foundation trust, JCUH, Marton Road, Middlesbrough TS4 3BW

Salary: Band 6

We are seeking a skilled and motivated Biomedical Scientist (Band 6) to join our dynamic Microbiology team within the Bacteriology department. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced professional to contribute to a critical area of healthcare, providing essential support to clinicians in the diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases.

About the Role:

As a Biomedical Scientist, you will play a vital role in the laboratory analysis of clinical specimens, including body fluids (such as blood, urine, and cerebrospinal fluid), solid tissues, and various artificial devices (such as heart valves and contact lenses).

Your primary responsibility will be to ensure the accuracy and technical correctness of test results, which are critical for the effective diagnosis and treatment of patients.

You will work both independently and as part of a team, adhering to established standard operating procedures (SOPs). In addition to specimen analysis, you will collaborate closely with clinical staff, communicating test results and providing advice on sample requirements.

As a key member of our team, you will contribute to maintaining high standards of quality, safety, and accuracy in all laboratory processes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Laboratory Analysis: Perform a range of microbiological analyses, including the identification of pathogens, sensitivity testing, and microscopy. You will handle specimens that may contain infectious agents, adhering to health and safety protocols.
  • Quality Control: Participate in internal and external quality control programs, ensuring that laboratory standards are maintained. You will also contribute to audits and report any non-conformances, working with the senior team to implement improvements.
  • Data Management: Accurately enter test results into the laboratory information system, with some results released directly to service users without consultant authorization.
  • Communication: Liaise directly with clinical staff, including consultants, nurses, and GPs, to provide clear and accurate test results and advice. Sensitivity is required when handling results with significant social or medical implications.
  • Training and Supervision: Provide guidance and training to junior staff, including trainee Biomedical Scientists and support staff, ensuring adherence to SOPs and best practices. You will also have the opportunity to specialize in a specific area of microbiology, becoming a key trainer and contributor to department improvements.
  • Health and Safety: Ensure compliance with all health and safety regulations, particularly those related to handling hazardous materials in a microbiology setting. You will be responsible for maintaining a safe working environment for yourself and your colleagues.

What We’re Looking For:

  • Qualifications: You must be HCPC registered and hold an IBMS-approved degree and an IBMS specialist portfolio in Microbiology (or an HNC for those registered before 1984).
  • Experience: Prior experience in a microbiology lab is essential, including familiarity with processing various specimen types and performing microbiological testing.
  • Skills: Strong technical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work under pressure are key to success in this role. Excellent communication skills are also essential, as you will be interacting with a range of healthcare professionals.

Why Join Us?

This role offers a unique opportunity to make a significant impact on patient care while developing your skills and knowledge in a fast-paced, supportive environment. You will have access to professional development opportunities and the chance to specialize in an area of microbiology that interests you.

If you are a dedicated Biomedical Scientist with a passion for microbiology and a commitment to excellence, we want to hear from you!
