This is an exciting opportunity to join an innovative cancer pre-habilitation and rehabilitation team, working with patients in exercise and activity, nutritional and wellbeing support to optimise health before and during cancer treatment and support recovery and rehabilitation after.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and Clinical Exercise Physiologist who can work effectively within a multi-disciplinary team to provide an excellent level of clinical exercise provision to patients who are either preparing for or recovering from cancer treatment.

Main duties of the job

To assess, plan and deliver physical activity prehabilitation and rehabilitation programmes to patients undergoing a range of oncology treatment pathways in both one to one and group settings at sites across the city.

To assess the progress of patients during their time with Active Together and to adapt their programmes appropriately to ensure safe and effective prehabilitation and rehabilitation.

To promote healthy living in patients and support behaviour change.

To support, supervise and train fitness instructors and students and where necessary assistants and other Active Together team members within the service.

Adopt a personalised care approach to management of patients, including an understanding of behaviour change approaches and “what matters to you”.

Contribute to the evaluation of the service against Key Performance Indicators for feedback to Yorkshire Cancer Research.

Place the need to address health inequalities through Active Together as a priority in patient care and service development.

Contribute to the operational management and continuous improvement of Active Together Sheffield.

To contribute to the development of Active Together across South Yorkshire by being involved in service development and liaising with wider team member when required.

Working for our organisation

The Active Together Programme is a collaboration between Yorkshire Cancer Research, Sheffield Hallam University and Sheffield Teaching Hospitals which provides a research-based prehabilitation and rehabilitation service to patients as part of their cancer treatment pathway.

The service is multimodal with a focus on physical activity, nutrition and mental health, with a multidisciplinary team including, Physiotherapists, Exercise Specialists, Dietitians, Psychologist, Fatigue Specialist and Occupational Therapist.

This vacancy is advertised on a fixed term contract basis for a period until 31st March 2026 due to the post being externally funded. The fixed term contract status of the post holder will be reviewed in accordance with the Trust's legal obligations regarding fixed term contracts taking into consideration the ongoing source of the external funding and the requirement for the post to be maintained.

Person specification

Education, Qualifications and Membership

Essential criteria
  • BSc Sport and Exercise Science / Exercise Physiology or closely related subject
  • Academy of Healthcare Science (AHCS) registration via AHCS accredited MSc in Clinical Exercise Physiology or via AHCS Clinical Exercise Physiologist (CEP) equivalence pathway
  • AHCS registration as a CEP annually maintained
  • Evidence of post graduate development of knowledge and skills rehabilitation or oncology.
  • Demonstrate commitment to Continuous Professional Development via personal development plans/file
Desirable criteria
  • Training from a recognised provider for undergraduate student supervision

Other

Essential criteria
  • Health clearance from Occupational Health to the role specified
  • Due to the requirement to work across sites and transport non-portable equipment, the postholder is required to be either a car driver with a valid driving

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Completion of post-registration roles in a range of clinical areas e.g. cardiac Rehabilitation, exercise testing.
  • Experience of leading structured and graded exercise programmes for people with cardiovascular and co-morbid conditions e.g., cancer, pulmonary etc
  • Experience of leading the development of exercise programmes tailored to individual patient needs.
  • Experience of leading clinical assessments, problem identification and treatment
  • Experience of leading group exercise sessions
  • Experience of supervising, managing and developing more junior staff through appraisal
  • Involvement in Service Development
  • Involvement in Research

Desirable criteria
  • Specialist knowledge of working with people with cancer.
