Bristol Royal Hospital for children is a tertiary, specialised hospital receiving the most complex referrals, from both local and national centres.

Bristol Royal Hospital for Children has been recognised for providing outstanding care for children and young adults with muscle wasting condition. In 2019 was awarded Centre of Clinical Excellence status by Muscular Dystrophy UK.

The neuromuscular service are one of the four designated centres for several pioneering therapies including most recently Zolgensma.

This role will involve liaising with children living with neuromuscular (NM) disease, their families and carers; members of the public; consultants, GPs and other medical staff; physiotherapy, nursing, and other therapy staff; community and acute providers; primary care teams; social services; other specialist practitioners; statutory and voluntary organisations.

It will be necessary to do this at local, regional and national level.

The NM service works in close partnership with the South West Neuromuscular Operational Delivery Network (SWNODN) to develop and establish world class and equitable care for people and all ages living with rare NM condition as in the South west of England.

The partnership has enhanced access to care across the region and improved the transition from child services to adult services.

To continue to deliver and develop an excellent, comprehensive specialist physiotherapy service for children with Neuromuscular Disease (as defined by the National Specialised Definition set) across the South West region.

To be a core member of the Neuromuscular Disease multi-disciplinary team, working in partnership with health and social care providers, working across and within traditional professional and organisational boundaries in hospital, education and community settings.

To support, enable and empower children with Neuromuscular Disease, their parents/carers and families to make informed decisions about physiotherapy care and to promote self-management and maximise independence.

To establish appropriate pathways of care and communication between physiotherapists and other professionals to ensure effective delivery of this service.

To provide education, training and support for physiotherapists and other professionals both within BCH and across the south west.

To regularly represent Bristol Royal Hospital for children and the SWNODN within national forums.

To provide education, training and support for people with Neuromuscular Disease, their parents, families and carers.

To contribute to research, audit and maintaining ongoing professional development.
