Locum Consultant Urologist with special interest in Endourology (10 PAs)

Main duties of the job

Applications are invited to apply for a full time Locum Consultant Urologist with a sub-specialty interest in Endourology. The role will be based across Epsom & St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust to support the Urology department in the achievement of its Emergency and Elective Performance standards.

This post attracts 10 PAs. This is for a 12 month fixed term post with a view to a substantive appointment.

The Urology Department provides a comprehensive general urology service covering all the main sub specialties. There are close links with the Royal Marsden Hospital and St George’s hospital for oncology and more complex urological conditions.

The department is well supported by an interventional radiology department. The Urology department supports the Renal unit at St Helier. There is an onsite lithotripter and the department offers a regional acute and elective lithotripsy service.

Specialist nursing staff attached to the department include 2 Advanced Nurse Practitioners, four urology nurse specialist in benign urology and six in cancer

You must be fully registered with the GMC and hold Licence to Practice and ideally be on the Specialist Register, or within six months of attaining your CCT or equivalent at interview stage.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
  1. To, at all times, comply with the GMC’s guidance on ‘Good Medical Practice’ as amended or substituted from time to time.
  2. To ensure that patient confidentiality is maintained at all times.
  3. To undertake duties as defined within the attached job plan in so far as practicable and in agreement with your Clinical Director.
  4. To be responsible and managerially accountable for the reasonable and effective use of Trust resources that you use and influence, and professionally accountable to the Medical Director.
  5. On commencement to ensure personal attendance at the Trust’s corporate Induction (or arranged Consultant Induction).
  6. To participate in the Trust’s Statutory & Mandatory training programme.
  7. To be responsible for the clinical management of out-patients under your care.
  8. The principal duty of this post is to provide a comprehensive clinical service to patients.

Qualifications and Training

Essential criteria
  • Hold a medical qualification or qualification registered with the GMC
  • Entry onto the Specialist Register for GMC or be within six months of obtaining CCT/CESR
  • Appropriate higher medical qualification i.e. MRCS
Desirable criteria
  • MD or equivalent higher degree or evidence of relevant research
  • ATLS provider/instructor status

Clinical, Management & Admin

Essential criteria
  • High standard of clinical skill and expertise in Urology
  • Able to contribute to the full range of skills required for the on call rota for Urology
  • Audit/Research experience
  • Has attended a recognised management training event or will have such training on completion of CCT/CESR
  • Supervision of postgraduate trainees
  • Personal time management skills
  • Clinical governance
  • Ability to organise inpatient and outpatient waiting lists
Desirable criteria
  • Proven track record in Urology
  • A subspeciality interest
  • Familiarity within issues of service organisation and development

Teaching and Research Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of teaching undergraduate and post graduate trainees
  • Ability to teach clinical skills
  • Ability to contribute to change management
  • Ability to apply research findings to clinical problems
  • Ability to critically review research
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of teaching basic clinical skills to undergraduates/postgraduates
  • Experience of supervising junior doctors
  • Experience of teaching lay groups and other staff groups
  • Ability to supervise postgraduate research
  • Publications in peer review journals

Language

Essential criteria
  • Demonstratable skills in written and spoken English to the appropriate standard necessary to fulfil the job requirements
