A new and exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior Occupational Therapist to join our new Stroke/Critical Care rotation.

You will be supported by the Band 7 OT for Stroke/Critical Care and be working closely with a team of qualified and non-qualified Occupational Therapy colleagues across the pathways. You will also be working closely with other AHP colleagues within Stroke and Critical Care.

The successful candidate will advocate for patients and contribute to the rehabilitation MDT/goal setting. You will continue to work with these patients to formulate a safe discharge plan into the community. You will contribute to the development of critical care rehabilitation services for patients along the pathway.

For the Critical Care rotation, the successful applicant will work alongside a strong multidisciplinary team of Consultants, Advanced Clinical Practitioners, Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Speech and Language Therapists, Rehabilitation Practitioners to provide early rehabilitation of physical, cognitive, and psychosocial assessment and interventions.

Main duties of the job

For the stroke rotation, the successful applicant will work in a dedicated OT team, alongside a supportive MDT, to deliver Occupational Therapy as part of a 7-day service. Predominantly based on a combined Stroke Unit, the team treat patients in the hyper-acute, acute and rehabilitation stages of their Stroke admission.
The team also provide an Early Supported Discharge service which provides outreach therapy services from the Stroke Unit, enabling patients to continue therapy with staff at home following discharge. The team is committed to delivering high standards of care across the whole patient pathway in line with National Clinical Guidelines for Stroke.

As well as providing care for Stroke patients, the team also treat patients with other Neurological conditions within the Trust.

We are seeking applications from individuals with a passion for providing rehabilitation for people with Neurological conditions. Time management skills are essential; as well as the ability to be flexible to be able to manage a mixed acute and rehab caseload in a busy setting.

Excellent communication skills will be key, as you will be working with patients and their families in stressful and complex situations. The successful candidate will also demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills and be committed to team working both within OT and the wider MDT.

We are commissioned to provide a seven-day service, so flexibility to work weekends will be required.

Qualifications & Training

Essential criteria
  • Qualification in Occupational Therapy at degree or diploma level.
  • Relevant post-graduate training
  • HCPC registered
  • APPLE accreditation
  • Evidence of recent CPD specific to specialty

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant post graduate experience of working in the Neurology and/or Critical Care specialty
  • The ability to formulate and evaluate treatment programmes and discharge procedures (in line with OT practice and ethics)
  • Understanding of complex discharge issues and the needs of carers
  • Participation in service development, research and audit
  • Evidence of CPD
  • Teaching/supervising staff and students
  • Specific skills relating to the post including knowledge of medical conditions and their management
  • Evidence of MDT working
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in acute physical setting
  • Experience of rehabilitation practice and ethos
  • Community experience

Skills & Knowledge
