The Faculty
The Languages Faculty at Bury Grammar School is high-achieving and encourages pupils to explore different cultures whilst instilling a love of language learning. We offer French, German and Spanish to GCSE and A level. In Year 7, pupils study French and then choose either German or Spanish in Year 8.Year 12 students can opt for the Sixth Form Languages and Communication pathway. Our Faculty is staffed with language specialists and native speakers. Pupils are encouraged to speak in the target language and have contact with Foreign Language Assistants to nurture their linguistic abilities.
Our French and Spanish Departments are flourishing, with a strong uptake at GCSE and A Level. The successful candidate must be able to teach French to A Level (though previous experience of this isn’t necessary) and Spanish to KS3. At both Key Stage 4 and Key Stage 5, the department teaches AQA specifications, with pupils currently studying for the GCSE in Years 9 to 11 and A Level during Years 12 and 13.Pupils of all ages are also regularly entered for both local and national competitions and have a healthy record of success in these areas.
Our varied extra-curricular programme includes MFL Film Club, Spelling and Translation Bee, Italian and Russian. We also run masterclasses in French, German and Spanish to prepare pupils for A Level studies. We contribute to the school's Super curriculum programme and deliver lectures on languages, culture and linguistics to our older students.
The Languages Faculty prides itself on its organisation of many school trips. We organise one of the longest running exchanges in the country with Köln Deutzer Gymnasium in Germany. We also run annual trips to Berlin, Madrid and Normandy.
