Technician (Lighting)

Location: The Glasshouse International Centre for Music
Working hours: 40 hours per week (across a 7-day-a-week rota to include evenings, weekends, and bank holidays)

Salary: SCP 27, £30,617 per annum

About the role of Technician at The Glasshouse

The Technician is required to be able to operate technical equipment to a high standard and be responsible for ensuring the safe
and efficient technical presentation of all concerts, events, productions, hires and projects within all the performance spaces at

The Glasshouse. They will work with both internal and external clients to present all kinds of activities to the highest standard.

It would be great if you had experience in:

  • Practical working experience of technical operations for live events and conferences, gained through at least two years working
in venues or external sites (with capacity of at least 400 audience members)
  • Ability to read and implement technical layout plans.
  • Developed IT skills and ability to assimilate new technology and software.
  • Willingness to work flexibly across a 7-day-a-week rota to include evenings weekends and bank holidays.
  • An ability to work to tight non-negotiable deadlines, whilst remaining calm and organised
  • Demonstrable ability to work as part of a team and use own initiative.
  • An ability to be creative and resourceful in problem solving.
  • An approachable and welcoming character, with an emphasis on creating and sustaining good working relationships.

Skills and knowledge of:

Lighting (Essential)
  • Expertise in programming and operating Avolites lighting consoles for live performances.
  • Good working knowledge of installed and portable dimming systems and power distribution.
  • Working knowledge of connectivity and networking solutions for lighting systems.
  • Good knowledge of lighting fixtures (including intelligent moving fixtures).
  • Strong experience of lighting within live music production.
Lighting (Desirable)
  • Ability to create lighting plans.
  • Experience of programming and operating other lighting control consoles (eg MA and Chamsys).
Audio (Desirable)
  • Experience of mixing audio on digital consoles.
  • Working knowledge of microphone types and best application practices.
  • Experience of audio within live music production.
Audio-Visual (Desirable)
  • Experience of setting up/ or operating Audio-Visual equipment on live events.
  • Good all round IT knowledge with Apple and PC products.

It also helps if you have:

  • Experience of safe operation of flying systems, including basic rigging knowledge and experience of operating motor chain
hoists.
  • Experience stage managing amplified performances.
  • Experience of maintaining and repairing equipment.
  • Experience of carrying out Portable Appliance Testing.
  • Awareness and experience of Health & Safety legislation and practice including noise at work and working at height.
  • Experience working with national and international artists, tour managers, promoters, and hirers.
  • Ability to read rigging plans.
  • An understanding of other areas of live music productions (apart from your specialism)
  • Comfortable working at height and within confined, dusty, and loud areas.
  • IOSH qualification and/or experience of preparing Risk Assessments and Method Statements

You’ll be responsible for:

Events: To work on events, shows and rehearsals (as part of Technical Production teams)
  • Working with and under the guidance of the Senior Technician (and/or relevant Production Manager), plan, install and operate
equipment correctly to realise the event/production design to the highest standards.
  • Undertake duties regularly as an event technician, which may involve Lighting, Stage Management, Audio or Audio-Visual, as

required.

Maintenance & Inspections: Support senior members to ensure all technical equipment is operational and maintained to the highest

standards.
  • Proactively support senior members of the team with the implementation of all preventative and reactive maintenance
  • Undertake maintenance and inspections of technical equipment and resources.
Safety & Compliance: Help cultivate a culture where safety and compliance with Health and Safety regulations is at the forefront

of the minds of those working on our events.
  • Follow and observe all safety guidelines, risk assessments and method statements when working with our team of event
technicians.
  • Promote and ensure safe working practices are followed for events with internal and external teams.
  • Follow guidelines and direction to ensure that technical equipment is installed, operated, and maintained to meet statutory
requirements, including ensuring the safety of in-house and touring equipment.
  • Proactively support senior members of the team during all statutory H&S inspections.
  • At times, provide H&S supervision on events where required.
Client Relations: Cultivate robust relationships with clients, event organisers, artists and internal teams, focusing on clear

communication and exceeding client expectations.
  • Ensure that all creative teams, visiting companies, clients and artists always feel welcome, engaged and supported and receive
the highest level of technical support.
  • Develop and sustain positive relationships with artists, clients, internal and external teams and contractors.
Continuous improvement, training and development: Support Senior members of the team by delivering guidance and training.
  • Train other technical staff on the use technical equipment and procedures.
  • Deliver guidance and training to contractors and touring production teams when required.
  • Collaborate with Senior members of the team to pinpoint areas for process enhancement, new technology and team skills

development.

Reporting: Support senior members of the team in reviewing event outcomes, technical challenges, and performance.
  • Work with all team members to review processes and methods of work.
  • Ensure all technical production equipment faults are reported.

Other duties: All other duties as may reasonably be required:

  • Accept appropriate individual responsibility for the observance, promotion and implementation of Health & Safety, Safeguarding,
Customer Care, Inclusion, Equity and Diversity, Discrimination, Bullying and Harassment and all other policies with the Trust.
  • Where relevant, ensure appropriate safeguarding is in place for children, young people and adults at risk, working closely with
relevant colleagues to maintain consistency.
  • Help the Technical Team to work efficiently and to the highest standards.
