Job overview

Come and join our forward thinking and supportive Ophthalmology team.

We are looking to appoint an innovative and high performing Specialty Doctor with independent out-patient clinic across all Ophthalmology, specifically focusing on Medical Retina and Emergency sub-specialties. The ability to undertake macular injections is desirable.

Other sub speciality interest would be considered which would be discussed upon interview / appointment based upon experience and service need.

The department is a teaching environment supporting the educational and clinical development of junior trainees and non-medical teams (including Nurse Practitioners, ACPs, Orthoptists and Optometrists) to support their development within extended roles.

Main duties of the job

Supporting outpatient capacity across all Ophthalmology, including Medical Retina and Emergency. Sub speciality clinics will be based on experience and interest.

The post holder will be part of the emergency eye clinic team undertaking outpatient clinics along with triage from primary care and internal ED departments across site.

There is also the expectation to join the tier 1 non-resident on-call rota and support ward rounds.

Working for our organisation

CHFT has 2 main sites, Ophthalmology being based in Acre Mills Out-patients, Huddersfield and Calderdale Royal Hospital, Halifax.

The Trust is currently one of the most digitised in the country. Along with using Medisight and an electronic referral portal (EyeV), this makes us currently one of the most paper-light and digitised Ophthalmology Departments in the country.

The department is undertaking a number of transformational projects internally and working in partnership with WYAAT on a number of sub-specialty projects to standardise pathways of care. We also continue our collaborative working with local Optometrists and the ICB to deliver new and patient centred community schemes to meet the demands of our local population.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

This is a 12 month, fixed term post.

It is an excellent opportunity to join a dynamic and motivated team comprising 20 Consultants, 8 Specialty Drs and 1 Trust Grade Doctor, 4 Specialty trainees, 2 qualified ACPs, 2 Nurse Practitioners, 10 Orthoptists, 5 Optometrists and a substantial team of Ophthalmic Nurses, technicians and healthcare assistants.

The department also supports requests to undertake research studies and internal audit as required.

The department also benefits from an ECLO and a team of Failsafe Co-ordinators and secretarial support, along with a supportive senior management team within the Head and Neck Directorate.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Minimum of 3 years Ophthalmic Post-Graduate experience with completion of Foundation Training
  • Applicants must continue to hold a Licence to Practise
  • MRCS or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • Relevant higher degree

Experience and Achievements

Essential criteria
  • Must be able to demonstrate a varied level of sub-specialty clinical experience and competence in aspects of Ophthalmology
  • Evidence of experience and training in assessing and treating patients in General Ophthalmology / emergency eye care clinics and on-call settings
  • Evidence of experience in planning and / or managing Ophthalmic patients within other sub-specialties
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of experience and training in assessing and treating Medical retina cases and / or sub – specialty specific cases
  • Experience of undertaking IVI macular injections
  • Understanding current issues within Ophthalmology and the future direction of the specialty
  • Understanding current issues within the wider NHS
  • Attendance at a recognised management course
  • Shows ability to work with and lead others across professions

Teaching and training

Essential criteria
  • Experience of and enthusiasm for clinical teaching of postgraduate doctors and non-medical staff.
Desirable criteria
  • Academic achievements/evidence of familiarity with research methods which have resulted in publications
  • Training in clinical and educational supervision
  • Attendance at a teaching course
  • Formal qualification in teaching/education

Essential criteria
  • Eligibility to work in the UK
  • Ability to work in various locations throughout the network of services provided by Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust
  • For areas requiring EPP Clearance (Exposure Prone Procedures), this will also be a requirement of the health screening
  • An enhanced DBS disclosure will be required with the Disclosure and Barring Service

You may be required to undertake a DBS. The Trust will administer the DBS check on your behalf and will recover the cost (Enhanced £54.40, Standard £26.40 or Basic £26.40) from your salary when you commence in post (including Internal staff).

You will also be required to participate in the DBS Update Service and pay the £16 cost per year. This is a condition of your employment.
