Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the existing Respiratory Nurse Team within the Stockport NHS Foundation Trust. We are looking to recruit a band 6 nurse with a keen interest in Respiratory Medicine. The main focus of the role will be working within the Respiratory Nursing Team.

The respiratory nursing team is a small welcoming and knowledgeable team who are able to adapt to a varied workload. The team always uphold the trust values of 'we care', 'we listen' and 'we respect.'

This specialist role will support the organisation in the delivery of care for respiratory patients and their families. This will be in accordance with the philosophy and standards of care within the specialty, ensuring that Trust values and beliefs are upheld.

This role will look to suit a motivated, enthusiastic individual, the ideal candidate must demonstrate their ability to work under pressure, be adaptable to change and thrive in an environment with a varied workload.

This position is a permanent role at 37.5 hours per day. At present, the service provides cover form Monday to Friday.

Main duties of the job
  • Provide a professional, specialist clinical support to medical and nursing staff in relation to respiratory patients for inpatients and outpatients.
  • Provide leadership that promotes patient focused care.
  • Ensure patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are seen within 24 hours of admission to achieve best practice tariff and identify those suitable for early supported discharge.
  • Provide clinical leadership ensuring the delivery of the highest professional standards through staff development and individual performance appraisal/review.
  • Interpret Arterial Blood Gases (ABG) to assist in oxygen assessments.
  • Provide a comprehensive and appropriate short and long term management plan for respiratory patient, using expert knowledge and clinical reasoning.
  • Develop into an independent autonomous practitioner.
  • Work alongside the community COPD/oxygen teams providing seamless care.
  • Provide expert nursing advice and support to other Health Care Professionals (HCP).
  • Develop and deliver nurse led clinics.
  • Participate and support the CURE tobacco addiction team.
  • Identifying training needs within the team and deliver education and training as required.
  • Provide mentoring, advice and support to associate specialist nurses, respiratory ward nurses and students.
  • Deliver NIV training. Support NIV therapy within the clinical setting.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of, and adhere to professional, clinical, national and local guidelines.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
  • Provide a professional, specialist clinical support to medical and nursing staff in relation to respiratory patients for inpatients on the wards and out patients within the Chest Clinic setting.
  • Provide leadership that promotes patient focused care.
  • Maintain the established databases – update, prioritise and ensure patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are seen within 24 hours of admission to achieve best practice tariff (BPT).
  • Identify COPD patients that may be suitable for early supported discharge (ESD).
  • Provide clinical leadership ensuring the delivery of the highest professional standards through staff development and individual performance appraisal/review.
  • Assessing respiratory patients within the inpatient setting.
  • To aid and make clinical decisions utilising expert knowledge and clinical reasoning
  • The interpretation of ABG’s, applying these to practice in order to assist the performance of oxygen assessments.
  • Review respiratory patients prior to discharge as requested.
  • Provide a comprehensive and appropriate plan for the short and long term management of the respiratory patient.
  • Work alongside the established respiratory nurses, developing skills and knowledge in all areas of respiratory care and management.
  • Develop into an independent autonomous practitioner.
  • Work alongside the community COPD/oxygen teams referring patients on for continued support providing a seamless care for patients with respiratory disease.
  • Involvement within the Tuberculosis (TB) service within the Stockport area. Assess, support and manage the individual with tuberculosis and their families. Management of notifications, contact tracing and the tuberculosis database.
  • Provide expert nursing advice and support to other Health Care Professionals (HCP).
  • Develop and deliver nurse led clinics.
  • Participate and support the CURE tobacco addiction team.
  • Identifying training needs within the team and delivering education and training as required.
  • To provide mentoring, advice and support to associate specialist nurses, respiratory ward nurses and students.
  • Deliver NIV training to hospital staff. Support and deliver NIV therapy within the clinical setting.
  • To demonstrate knowledge of, and adhere to professional, clinical, national and local guidelines.

If successful this vacancy will require an enhanced DBS check at a cost of £54.50. This cost will be deducted from your first Trust salary

In addition to this it will be a condition of your employment that you will join the DBS update service and pay the annual subscription fee of £16.

Essential criteria
  • Relevant post registration experience of 18 months at Band 6 or above
  • Nurse registration
Desirable criteria
  • Advanced communication training
  • Specialised Respiratory Module qulaification

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of providing extensive nursing care to respiratory patients at band 6
  • Evidence of, experience and good knowledge of nursing NIV patients
  • Knowledge and experience of inhaler therapies and optimisation of therapy
  • Clinical governance experience
  • Research and audit experience eg. NRAP
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of Tuberculosis case management

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of leadership experience.
  • Experience of teaching in various formats e.g. teaching packages developed, formal programmes delivered.
  • Experience of managing a case load or team.
