Main duties of the job

As a Thoracic Consultant Surgeon, you will take a leadership role in delivering exceptional clinical care to patients requiring thoracic surgical procedures. Your responsibilities will include performing complex surgeries with precision, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to ensure optimal outcomes, and contributing to the development of innovative treatment approaches.

You will play a critical role in mentoring junior staff, advancing research initiatives, and upholding the highest standards of patient safety and care.

To excel in this role, candidates must demonstrate outstanding technical expertise in thoracic surgery, strong decision-making skills, and a commitment to advancing both patient care and governance standards. Professional Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Eligible for full registration with the GMC and eligible to apply for GMC Specialist Register at time of appointment and hold a current licence to practise.
  • An appropriate higher thoracic surgical qualification.
Desirable criteria
  • Higher Academic Degree

Clinical Experience

Essential criteria
  • Excellent clinical skills (ability to carry out complex lung resection including chest wall and tracheal surgery)
  • Proven track record on minimally invasive surgery
  • Capacity to use and develop a wide range of theoretical approaches.
  • Record of consistent academic activity including publications of scientific articles on national and international journals on Thoracic surgical and lung cancer topics
  • Involvement in the clinical audit process and an understanding of its aims and objectives.
Desirable criteria
  • Proven Record of benign chest wall surgery procedures performe
  • Role in national and international Thoracic Surgical/lung cancer societies
  • Understanding and proven ability to apply research findings in a clinical / organisational context.

Clinical Skills

Essential criteria
  • Comprehensive training in Thoracic Surgery
Desirable criteria
  • Fellowship in thoracic surgery

Clinical Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Commensurate with post CCT/fellowship training
