You will join a friendly, well-established, integrated learning disability team with a focus on delivering high quality service for adults with learning disabilities.

Bolton’s learning disability health service is integrated into the Community Learning Disability Team, combining the learning disability health services with social care. The team is based at Farnworth Town Hall located within the Bolton borough.

You will be an enthusiastic occupational therapist, with a passion to help others and to work with adults who have a learning disability and complex physical health needs and/or behaviours.

Main duties of the job

To manage a caseload, using evidence based, client centred principles to provide specialised assessments, implementation and evaluation of Occupational Therapy intervention.

There will be opportunity to bring creative thinking into your work and use skills acquired throughout your previous Occupational Therapy training and experience.

The post holder will have access to clinical supervision, peer and managerial support. There is a commitment to providing ongoing training and professional development, including development of skills and leadership opportunities.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To provide occupational therapy (OT) support to service users who have a learning disability. The post holder will work across a variety of community settings to deliver occupational therapy assessment, intervention and review to individuals who may have complex presentations.

With support from senior therapy colleagues, participate in research and development activity and contribute to the overall development of learning disability services.

  1. To provide specialised OT assessment of individuals with learning disabilities referred to the service who may have complex needs which may include additional mental health problems, autism and/or challenging behaviours.
  2. To participate in capacity assessments alongside members of the MDT. Requires good working knowledge of Mental Capacity Act and use of appropriate Mental Capacity Act (MCA) documentation.
  3. To be responsible for implementing a range of OT interventions for individuals, carers, families and groups, contributing to MDT and assessment.
  4. To manage a clinical caseload with supervision from a senior OT colleague, whilst retaining professional responsibility for assessment, intervention and discharge.
  5. To provide specialist OT advice, guidance and consultation to other professionals contributing directly to an individual’s intervention plan.
  6. To undertake risk assessment and risk management for individual’s and to provide advice to other professionals on therapy aspects of risk assessment and risk management.
  7. To communicate in a skilled and sensitive manner, keeping individuals and their representatives (where appropriate) informed, maintaining confidentiality.

The postholder will be a car driver with access to a car for work duties.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • A recognised BSc Honours degree in Occupational Therapy or equivalent. HCPC registration.
Desirable criteria
  • Registered member of the British Association of Occupational Therapists.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of multi-disciplinary working.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working with adults with a learning disability.

Knowledge and Skills

Essential criteria
  • Good organisational skills.
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of cultural and ethnic diversity and ability to adapt approach to meet cultural needs.
