The priority for this part time post is the assessment and treatment of high caries patients referred to Paediatric Dentistry at Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS foundation trust. The sessions will predominantly be based within the Dental Hospital but maybe also be within our community sites depending on the service needs.
Main duties of the job
The post is 0.6 WTE Specialty Dentist in Paediatric Dentistry. The contract will be with Birmingham Community Health NHS Foundation Trust and the post holder will be responsible to the Clinical Director. If appropriate the post holder will be recommended for an honorary contract with the University of Birmingham.
The timetable for this post is flexible and will be agreed to reflect service needs and the interests and expertise of the post holder. A timetable and job plan will be agreed between the incumbent and the Head of Service for Paediatric Dentistry.It may involve sessions across the dental hospital and the community sites depending on service need.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The post involves:
The assessment of patients referred for caries management.
The provision of specialist care for the more complex cases that are referred to BCHC including the management of patients with dental trauma, congenital dental anomalies and children with behavioural problems, special needs and dental phobias.
The provision of care under sedation, primarily inhalation sedation, but with opportunities and facilities for treatment under intravenous sedation. The appointee may be involved in the supervision or teaching of junior members of staff
The post holder may be involved in the multidisciplinary clinics held in the department.
The post holder will be involved as appropriate, in the supervision and clinical training of staff within BCHC including dental pre-specialty and specialty trainees, dental therapists and dental nurses. There may be some involvement in the supervision of dental undergraduates and dental therapy undergraduates within BCHC.
The post holder is expected to participate in all aspects of Paediatric Dentistry Clinical Governance programmes and activities.
The post holder will be involved in regular appraisal and the identification of continuous professional development for which appropriate support will be given.

Qualifications
Essential criteria- Full registration with the General Dental Council (GDC).
- Completed four years full-time postgraduate training (or its equivalent gained on a part-time or flexible basis) since first obtaining registration, including adequate experience in the relevant specialty; or shall have equivalent experience and competencies
- FDS/MFDS/MJDF
- On or eligible for inclusion, GDC Specialist List in paediatric dentistry
experience and skills
Essential criteria- Paediatric Dentistry experience.
- Qualification or able to show equivalence in using inhalation sedation.
- Audit experience.
- Ability to work clinically without supervision.
- Teaching experience.
- Willingness to participate in research
- Demonstrable experience in the management of working with medically compromised patients
Special Aptititude/activities
Essential criteria- Good written and verbal communication skills
- A basic working knowledge of paediatrics and its relationship to paediatric dentistry
- Publications or formal presentation of papers at clinical or scientific meetings
