The post is based in the CAMEO Early Intervention in Psychosis Service in Peterborough.
CAMEO is a multi-award-winning community mental health service for people aged who are experiencing a first-episode psychosis. The focus is on recognising and treating psychotic experiences early to provide better outcomes and an improved chance of recovery.
CAMEO is a 3-year age inclusive (14-65) early intervention in psychosis service. CAMEO provides a whole raft of needs, including educational and vocational plans, as well as with housing, finances, and leisure activities. The psychological approaches include cognitive behaviour therapy, group and individual work, family work and brief family focus groups, and a range of interventions to help people to get back to college, work and develop social skills.
It also offers assessment for and treatment to people who are at risk of developing psychosis. CAMEO accepts direct referrals from any source, including patients and relatives. CAMEO has strong links with the department of psychiatry at the University of Cambridge and is involved in world class research projects.

CAMEO has influenced changes in policies and practice at national and international level.

The post holder will be one of two consultant psychiatrists in the team and provide assessment and treatment for all patients with early psychosis in their area. They will work alongside a passionate and highly committed multidisciplinary early intervention in psychosis team, including psychologists, nurses, occupational therapists, support workers and others, to cover a geographical patch around Peterborough.

In addition to direct clinical care, the post holders are expected to be active in teaching and training – including medical students, staff members and psychiatry trainees.

Depending on the interests of the post holder there are excellent opportunities to be involved in management, service development, psychological and family interventions, and under/post-graduate teaching. The CAMEO North service is very popular and highly regarded by medical students and offers a regular elective option to the School of Clinical Medicine at the University of Cambridge.

The post holder is expected to form close working relationships with team managers and to provide support and supervision to junior doctors in their teams. The post may be assigned Core Trainees, Specialty Trainees, Foundation Year Trainees or Specialty Doctors.

Key Clinical Responsibilities

The post holder will provide clinical leadership to the CAMEO service. They will contribute to assessment of patients referred to the service for diagnosis and treatment of patients with early symptoms of psychosis and support MDT members who also carry out assessments and manage such patients.
They will help to facilitate accurate diagnosis and timely interventions so that treatment can be delivered in a timely manner and in accordance with the recovery model. They will also provide ongoing treatments to patients that are evidence based and supported by NICE guidelines maintaining a bio psychosocial approach.

As clinical leader, they will work closely with the senior leadership team to ensure that the new NHS Standards for early intervention services are met and delivered beyond expectations, with the view to become an accredited early intervention in psychosis service by the Royal College of Psychiatrists.

Post holder is required to maintain Section 12(2) status and Approved Clinician status and have a comprehensive awareness of Mental Health, Mental Capacity and Care Act legislation. They will be expected to participate in Mental Health Act assessments when possible and share Responsible Clinician status for patients in the service on supervised community treatment orders in the locality.

The post holder is expected to be committed to a multidisciplinary approach to care and actively contribute to MDT meetings and formulation meetings and work in close collaboration with team members, care coordinators, other CPFT services and statutory agencies as required for the care of community patients.

The post holder is expected to embrace the knowledge, skills, and ethos of Early Intervention in Psychosis.

The CAMEO consultant is expected to support research activities within the service and ensure care is delivered to the highest quality.

The post holder will be expected to contribute to the collection of clinical information to ensure further service development and to enable audit, participate in clinical governance activities and contribute to the day-to-day management and to the overall service development agenda through collaboration with managerial and clinical colleagues.

The Trust is developing its services in line with modernised psychiatric practice. Consultants are actively involved in planning and developing services, and there will be opportunities to engage in quality improvement and service development work that is ongoing in the Trust.

Professional Responsibilities

Training and Development

Post holder is expected to participate in the Trust’s annual Appraisal process and to attend all relevant mandatory training as and when required to do so.

The post holder will be expected to take part in regular supervision, annual appraisal and annual job planning.

Other responsibilities

The post holder will be required to maintain his/her education, professional development and accreditation. Appropriate time and financial support is available for this purpose. The post holder undertakes, exceptionally, to be available for such irregular commitments outside normally rostered duties as are essential for continuity of patient care.

  1. This is not an exhaustive list of duties and responsibilities, and the post holder may be required to undertake other duties, which fall within the grade of the job, in discussion with the manager.
  2. This job description will be reviewed regularly in the light of changing service requirements, including the possibility of the work base changing to one of the other services within the Trust boundary of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough. Such a change would be discussed with the post holder and would form the basis of a revised job plan.
  3. The job plan is subject to review annually by the Consultant and Clinical Director. All consultants participate in annual appraisal and will re-validate with the General Medical Council. Collection of 360 degree feedback and patient feedback for these purposes is now routine. The Responsible Officer is the Medical Director, Dr Zahoor Syed.
  4. If the appointee has Mental Health Officer status under the NHS Superannuation Scheme this will be retained.
