Applications are invited for an enthusiastic and committed Paediatrician, who will join our established team of general paediatricians. We are seeking applicants with an interest in respiratory or allergy but additional special interests including the following will be considered:

  • Neonatology
  • Paediatric high dependency care
  • Safeguarding
  • Rheumatology
  • Immunology
  • Gastroenterology

This is a new consultant post to assist in managing the increasing clinical and administrative workload and help achieve the 'facing the future' standards set out by the RCPCH.

In particular, the appointment of the additional colleagues, will go some way in enhancing senior consultant presence in clinical areas and support a 'second on' duty paediatrician rota enabling 2 consultants to be present and providing acute clinical cover during the working week.

The post has clinical responsibilities covering services to children within the Acute Trust in conjunction with nine other consultants working as a team providing elective and emergency children’s acute service for children of North Northamptonshire

Main duties of the job

The Consultants operate a Paediatrician/ neonatal consultant of the week rota for the Children’s wards. The Paediatrician of the week is responsible for all paediatric in-patient Paediatric admissions during the week and for all Paediatric emergencies during regular working hours, with out of hour’s on-call shared amongst the consultant colleagues.

There is a separate consultant covering the neonatal unit from 9 AM to 5 PM during the working week and a split oncall rota. All paediatric and neonatal consultants partake in a shared rota covering the paediatric assessment unit 0900-1700hrs; 5 days/ wk.

Oncall:

On-call paediatric consultant attends handover ward round when on-call Weekend on-call are split with one consultant covering Friday and Sunday and is then Duty Paediatrician for the following week. A second consultant is on call for the Saturday.

During on-calls on-site presence will be from 1700 to 2200 hrs with on-call from home till 08:30. Consultant of the week is on call from 0830 till 1800 with additional hour (1700-1800) for handovers and urgent reviews. The consultant is expected to do ward rounds on Saturday and Sunday mornings and provide onsite cover from 0900 to 1500 hours..

Children and Young People Services are part of the Family health Division, led by a Chief of Division, a Divisional Director and Head of Nursing. Paediatrics and Obstetrics and Gynaecology, are each led by a Clinical Director

The newly appointed consultant will join the team of existing consultants to deliver a high quality emergency and elective neonatal/ paediatric service.

They will also have the opportunity to contribute to the development of the new hospital build and urgent care hub. These are exciting times with a proposed funding for our Estates project that may cause substantial restructuring and smart wards areas.

The urgent care hub is fast developing with a co-located PAU that is expected to evolve with excellent opportunities for a truly integrated working with primary, secondary and community care services.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Main Role
  • To provide a Consultant Paediatric and Neonatal service to children within the Trust in conjunction with Consultant Paediatriac colleagues.
  • The post is based at Kettering General Hospital NHS Trust. The post holder will reside within 10 miles or 30 minutes’ drive of the hospital.
  • To maintain annual Appraisal and Job Planning with Clinical Director and Revalidation with the Responsible Officer.
  • To participate in Junior Doctors appraisals, assessments, and training.
  • To participate in medical students training.
  • To participate in clinical governance activities of the department including participation in audits, developing, and updating guidelines, responding to complaints, and investigating adverse incidents.
  • To participate in safeguarding children and when required by department, to accept rotational named doctor for safeguarding role.
  • Paediatric Duties
  • To receive direct referrals from General Practitioners, Consultant colleagues, members of the Community Child Health Department, other health professionals and members of other agencies dealing with children
  • To provide outpatient clinics as per programme.
  • To provide consultant cover for safeguarding children.
  • To share the on-call Consultant Paediatric rota with the consultant colleagues. Internal cover is provided for absent colleagues. The on-call commitment includes cover for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. The appointee will need the appropriate skills to provide this cover

There is scope to have a dedicated time in the job plan to enhance and further develop the sub-speciality service delivery alongside the transformation programme. The Group model helps to enhance collaborative working as a county wide approach to speciality services with increased opportunity with a larger case mix, opportunities for research and enhancing excellence in paediatric care in Northants.

Person specification

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Full registration with GMC and Licence to Practice
  • Wide experience of Paediatrics in the UK
  • Effective participation in clinical audit
  • Experience of postgraduate and undergraduate teaching and training at an appropriate level
Desirable criteria
  • Specialist interest to complement those of other consultants in the department
  • Publications in recognised journals

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC Registration
  • MRCPCH or equivalent
  • CCT in Paediatrics (or within 6 months of interview)
  • Neonatology experience/ SPIN
  • At least 6 months tertiary neonatal experience at middle grade level
  • Current certification APLS and NLS
  • Level 3 safeguarding training in date

From 1st February 2019 all new starters to the Trust are required to join the DBS update service as per Trust DBS Re-checking Policy which has an annual cost of £16.

New employees who do not join the update service will be required to pay £49.50 for a new DBS check in 3 years time.
