About the Role

The Vision Support Team has an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and committed Qualified Teacher of the Visually Impaired with experience of working with visually impaired children in secondary education. We welcome applications from Qualified Teachers of the Visually Impaired with the PGDip/MA Mandatory Qualification for Teachers of Children and Young People with Visual Impairment and SEND experience.

Alternatively, teachers with SEND qualifications and direct experience of working with visually impaired children in secondary education with a willingness to undertake the two-year Mandatory Qualification in Visual Impairment.

Ideally the candidate will have direct experience and knowledge of teaching contracted braille and supporting the use of braille/assistive technologies with secondary aged visually impaired children / young people.

The Vision Support Service is made up of a team of Qualified Teachers of the Visually Impaired (QTVIs), Resource Technicians, Assistive Technology Specialists and Practitioners.

The successful applicant will have responsibility for a caseload of visually impaired children seen in a variety of settings, including mainstream, special schools and family homes around Leicestershire. The role will involve working with visually impaired children in secondary education but also across the wider age range, many of whom have additional SEND needs.

The role will also involve the support of children through assessment, direct teaching and building vision loss awareness, knowledge, skills and understanding through advice, support and training to families and educational settings.

A DBS enhanced check for a regulated activity is required for this post.

About You

To apply for this post, you must have:

  • Degree level qualification and Qualified Teacher Status, with the additional Mandatory Qualification in the Education of Visually Impaired Children or further training in the field of Special Educational Needs and Disability. The successful applicant would be expected to undergo the two-year training to gain the mandatory qualification if not already a qualified Teacher of Visually Impaired Children.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills – able to relate positively to students, parents and other professionals and establish effective working relationships within a range of educational settings.
  • Substantial experience of working directly with visually impaired children in both mainstream, special and pre-school settings/homes to improve outcomes and support inclusion.
  • Direct knowledge of the needs of children with visual impairment/SEND and their families. This includes effective teaching and learning assessments, strategies and resources to support the attainment and inclusion of pupils with a diagnosis of visual impairment and SEND.
  • Significant experience of working appropriately in accordance with relevant statutory and local policies and procedures for SEND and the ability carry out all duties in line with LCC Safeguarding policies and procedures and fulfil relevant safeguarding competencies.
  • Ability to actively demonstrate the values of the authority: Positivity; Trust and respect; Flexibility; Openness and Transparency
  • Must be able to perform all duties and tasks with reasonable adjustment, where appropriate, in accordance with the provisions of the Equality Act 2010. This will include requirements to travel to temporary bases such as schools, touch-down bases etc
