This post presents an exciting opportunity to be part of an excellent team working in a busy modern teaching hospital laboratory. The department has a workload of around 65 000 surgical requests per year and covers a wide range of routine and specialised services.

This is an excellent opportunity to work within a committed team of office, laboratory and Consultant Pathologist staff. The department encourages active professional development and further educational activities. The service is expanding Biomedical Scientist advanced dissection and Biomedical Scientist reporting roles.

The service is also currently developing digital pathology reporting, and is progressing towards full digital reporting. We also use CEREBRO specimen tracking system.

If you do not meet the full criteria for the band 6 job role, we will also consider applications from candidates at IBMS registered practitioner level or equivalent, who are working towards the IBMS specialist diploma (Histopathology) or have the necessary experience to be able to work towards completing this qualification.
If in a progressional post, you would also need to meet the other essential qualifications and other essential requirements for the band 6 job description. If this applies, you would start in a band 5 role, until all of the band 6 essential qualification criteria is met.

This will be expected to be completed within an agreed timeframe.

The Post holder will play a key role in the following areas:

  • Work as a specialist BMS in the immunohistochemistry/Molecular diagnostics/Main Lab services.
  • Carry out a range of specialised practical histology methodologies in the immunocytochemistry, molecular pathology, and section cutting services.
  • Carry out Mohs frozen sections.
  • Support band 7 staff, including staff/workload supervision, staff training, quality control and EQA.
  • Carry out audits and appraisals.
  • Support staff CPD.
Full time: 37.5hrs per week

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  1. Take charge of a specified area of work, including the Main laboratory and immunocytochemistry laboratory as required, supervise non-state registered staff and other BMS staff, and deputise for Band 7 section leaders when necessary
  2. Implement policies in specialised areas and propose changes that will improve and develop the service for users inside and outside the Trust
  3. To assist in the development and maintenance of standards as necessary for continuing CPA accreditation
  4. To carry out and document PDR plans with selected groups of staff

Clinical and Technical Responsibilities:

  1. Communicates complex clinical technical service related information, to colleagues, managers, consultants, nurses, other health care colleagues and patient carers
  2. Participates in departmental meetings and contributes to effective communication within the department
  3. Answers telephone inquiries from pathology users and patient carers and provide information that is highly complex about methodologies and service requirements
  4. Explains/discusses results of technical procedures with medical and BMS staff. Suggest alternative techniques as appropriate
