An exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic, motivated and committed midwife with strong clinical leadership and facilitation skills has arisen.

The successful applicant will work 18.75 hours per week within our Complex Care Maternity Services overseeing the provision of services for women and families requiring complex care.

The Specialist Complex Care Midwife will take responsibility for the ongoing development and provision of bespoke care planning for women and families accessing this specialist support whilst working closely with the other specialist services, and all members of the wider multidisciplinary team to ensure that care provided to women and their babies is both safe and effective.

To ensure the safe, efficient and effective provision of services for women accessing maternity services in line with the strategic vision, Trust policies and procedures.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will play a lead role in the setting, implementing and monitoring of clinical standards pertinent to substance misuse, perinatal mental health, complex care and provide clinical expertise, professional direction and leadership to midwives and support workers in the wider maternity service.

Manage, along with consultants, patients with complex pregnancy, and develop and maintain a close working relationship with the whole multidisciplinary team to ensure adequate and robust care planning, and follow up care for women affected by substance misuse.

The lead will take ownership for the daily delivery of care relating to substance misuse within the specified geographical area, whilst liaising with their specialist colleague who supports within the Southend, Castle Point & Rochford area. The role will also require the lead midwife to liaise between maternity teams, neonatology teams, ward areas, laboratory services, children's social care, local drugs services and other providers to assist in the planning of high-risk pregnancies and care of babies identified during the antenatal period as being exposed to various substances, to ensure a smooth-running seamless service.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Act as a specialist and expert resource in the defined area of midwifery practice related to women with complex care needs including substance misuse, teenage pregnancy, domestic abuse, perinatal mental health, asylum seekers and safeguarding concerns

Promote professional leadership and clinical excellence working in collaboration with the appropriate multi-disciplinary systemwide groups to meet the specific needs of service users and their families

To strive to achieve the best possible health and social outcome for woman and baby during and at the end of the pregnancy, and subsequently provide on-going support for as long as is necessary with other appropriate agencies involved

Communicate effectively with clinical, operational, administration and corporate staff via email, telephone and face to face contact in order to deliver the requirements of the role

Contribute to an environment that supports learning by sharing knowledge and skills and offering mentoring to students

Act as a role model at all times and ensures that all team members andothers give a high priority to policies and procedures relating to infectioncontrol in order to maintain a safe clinical environment for everyone.

Participate in the review of relevant guidelines and policies to ensure bestprofessional practice of maternity staff and contribute to the development of other agencies guidelines providing a maternity perspective

Co-ordinate holistic care to women and families affected by complex care issues

Exercise judgement in assessing wide-ranging issues always with the focus of promoting safety, choice, and engagement in care

Demonstrate effective communication skills in highly distressing or emotional circumstances with women, families and midwives e.g. personal and health problems

The role will encompass national guidance such as adhering to Continuity of Carer principles, personalisation and clinical guidance such as Saving Babies Lives

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Registered Midwife
  • Band 6 experience for 2 years
Desirable criteria
  • Community midwifery experience
  • Professional leadership training
  • Teaching/presentation to staff experience
  • Experience with vulnerable adults/complex care

Communication skills

Essential criteria
  • Able to communicate in difficult situations
  • Ability to prioritise competing demands and meet deadlines
Desirable criteria
  • Able to discuss emotive and sensitive issues
