Automation Engineer
Job Description:
We are looking for a talented and motivated Automation Engineer with experience in DeltaV or PCS7 Distributed Control Systems (DCS), SCADA and some entry-level exposure to Control & Instrumentation (C&I) to join our team in the pharmaceutical industry in Birmingham UK .
This role will focus on designing, implementing, and maintaining automation systems to support the manufacturing of pharmaceutical products in a GMP-regulated environment.
Job Duties and Responsibilities- Design DeltaV or PCS7 DCS and BMS hardware systems, including control panels, I/O modules, communication networks, and field devices.
- Design control system architectures, including network layouts and process control loops, to meet production requirements.
- Design and maintain communication networks between automation hardware components, including switches, routers, and fieldbus protocols (e.g., PROFIBUS, MODBUS, Ethernet/IP,OPC).
- Ensure secure and reliable data flow between field instruments, controllers, and higher-level systems (MES, ERP system) through robust network configurations.
- Ensure that all hardware systems comply with GMP, FDA, and 21 CFR Part 11 regulations and guidelines.
- Support the development and execution of hardware validation protocols (IQ/OQ/PQ) to ensure equipment and systems meet regulatory requirements.
- Knowledge of SIL and safety instrumented systems (SIS), ATEX environments.
- Ablle to interrogate P&IDs
- Assist with design development for DCS, PLC and SCADA based process control systems for IPS clients and projects.
- Support 3-D model development indicating location of all instruments.
- Support field activities, including on-site surveys and equipment walkdowns as required.
- Actively collaborate with the process design and project teams to support execution of successful project studies.
- Develop the design of process control and automation systems in compliance with cGMP, GAMP, related industry standards and customer requirements.
- Collaborate with client counterpart to develop control systems concepts, architectures and control platforms as applied to the client project.
- Identify, qualify and collaborate with third party system integrators as necessary to support project and company business objectives.
- Prepare or review construction budgets based on experience and scope of project.
- Promote the use of and participate in the development of company design and production standards.
- Support business development for process automation design and implementation. Assist in proposals, estimates, presentations and other sales and marketing documents.
- Assist process engineering development of P&ID’s and process control requirements as well as Functional Requirement Specifications (FRS).
- Work with end users and Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM’s) to coordinate application of automation products.
- Perform automation related job functions as assigned, including, I/O lists, Instrumentation lists, Instrument Datasheet and the specification of instrumentation and control element.
- Support risk assessments, including SIL, LOPA and HAZOP.
Qualifications & Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Automation, or Control Systems Engineering, or a related field.
- 3+ years of experience in automation hardware engineering, preferably within the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, or life sciences industries.
- Hands-on experience with hardware configuration and maintenance in DeltaV or PCS7 DCS platforms.
- Knowledge of Control & Instrumentation (C&I) systems, including the installation and calibration of field instruments.
- Familiarity with GMP, FDA, and 21 CFR Part 11 regulations as they pertain to automation hardware.
- Experience with hardware validation protocols (IQ/OQ/PQ) and documentation.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills, with the ability to diagnose and resolve hardware issues.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams.
- Knowledge of instrumentation and controls components such as transmitters (temperature, pressure, pH, conductivity, level, load cells, flow), control valves, regulators, etc.
