Job overview
This role involves senior clinical decision-making responsibilities, including delivering care across adult and Paediatric Emergency Departments and managing trauma cases. Additionally, the successful candidate will regularly act as the Emergency Physician in Charge (EPIC) in conjunction with the consultant of the day, overseeing the flow and operational management of the department.The applicant will be well led with excellent Clinical Supervision by senior staff during all shifts.You will be allocated a Consultant Mentor and Educational Supervisor to support and guide your professional development during your time with us.
Successful applicants will be welcomed into our vibrant and friendly multi-disciplinary team. There is a strong emphasis in team-work in our EDs and we work closely in collaboration with the Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC), and Intensive Care.
Since July 23^rd, 2024, we centralized the acute medical take, to Gloucester Royal Hospital. All the medical patients who present at Cheltenham and require admission, will be transferred to Gloucester. The Emergency department in Gloucester, has SOPs for direct referral to other specialties like Surgical Assessment Unit (SAU), Trauma Assessment Unit (TAU), Paediatric Assessment Unit for children under three months old (PAU), Head and Neck Short Stay Unit (HANSSU) as well as having a functioning Urgent Treatment Centre where the minor injuries and GP presentations are streamed.
Main duties of the job
As a Trust Specialty Registrar, your role will be in the initial assessment and treatment of the ill and injured patient as well as providing clinical advice to more junior ED doctors and EPs, where appropriate. You will have the opportunity to be part of the Trauma Team within the ED and to be the nominated Resus or Pediatrics doctor of the day.During a night shift, you will be in charge of the department. The clinical experience you gain will be diverse and interesting.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Clinical Duties- Provide high-quality care to patients in the Emergency Department, including adult, paediatric, and trauma presentations.
- Act as a senior decision-maker in complex and high-acuity cases, ensuring safe and timely interventions.
- Manage and oversee trauma cases, leading resuscitation and stabilisation efforts in collaboration with the trauma team.
- Deliver expert care to paediatric patients, ensuring adherence to safeguarding and best practice guidelines.
- Support the smooth running of the Emergency Department by balancing clinical care with operational demands.
- Supervise, support, and mentor junior doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals.
- Take on the EPIC role, assuming overall responsibility for patient flow, resource allocation, and operational management of the Emergency Department during assigned shifts.
- Coordinate care between different teams and specialties to ensure efficient and effective service delivery.
- Act as the first point of contact for escalation, supporting colleagues with decision-making and troubleshooting.
- Ensure patient safety and flow by prioritising cases and maintaining oversight of the entire department.
- Act as a clinical role model and provide supervision to junior staff and medical students.
- Deliver teaching sessions and contribute to departmental training programs, including trauma simulation and paediatric emergency scenarios.
- Foster a culture of collaboration, professionalism, and continuous learning within the multidisciplinary team.
- Participate in clinical audits, case reviews, and quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient safety and outcomes.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of departmental guidelines and protocols.

Person specification
Qualifications
Essential criteria- MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
- Full GMC registration with a license to practice.
- Membership of Royal College of Emergency Medicine (MRCEM) qualification or equivalent
- Advanced Life Support (ALS), Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS), Advanced Paediatric Life Support (APLS), or equivalent certifications.
- Teaching qualification e.g. PGCME
Experience
Essential criteria- Minimum of 3 years of Emergency Medicine experience
- Evidence of working at senior specialty trainee (ST4) level or equivalent.
- Proven expertise in managing adult, paediatric, and trauma cases.
- Competence in emergency procedures such as advanced airway management, fracture reduction, and life support.
- Prior NHS experience
- Prior experience in operational leadership roles, such as EPIC or equivalent.
- Relevant specialty qualifications (pre-hospital care, MRCP, FRCA or similar)
Knowledge
