An opportunity has arisen for an experienced Biomedical Scientist to join our team in the Metabolic Laboratory within Chemical Pathology at Great Ormond Street Hospital.

This is a busy laboratory providing a specialist service for the

diagnosis & monitoring of inborn errors of metabolism to internal patients, patients from external hospitals and overseas. It is well equipped with GC-MS, Tandem MS, HPLC & UHPLC systems. We are a UKAS accredited laboratory to ISO15189:2022 standards.

This position is fixed within the Metabolic Unit and you will be expected to work closely with our current team, liaising with the Metabolic Clinical Team, Dieticians & external service users on a regular basis.

Main duties of the job

You will be responsible for ensuring the smooth running of the service, troubleshooting complex, specialised assays & analysers, prioritising

workload, ensuring turnaround times & quality are maintained and

supervision & training of junior members of staff. You would also be expected to contribute to the continued improvement & expansion of the service and development of new assays. A good working knowledge of Chromatography techniques is essential.

This laboratory is open Mon-Fri but there may occasionally be requirements for weekend analysis.

You must hold current HCPC registration and MSc or equivalent

experience. Previous experience of working in Paediatric Metabolic

Biochemistry would be advantageous as well as experience of manual assays and use of GC-MS, Tandem MS & HPLC. A keen interest in the area of Metabolic Biochemistry is essential.

  • Demonstrable significant post registration experience in a chemical pathology clinical laboratory
  • Experience in a specialised, non-automated laboratory
  • Experience of using chromatography techniques & instrumentation
  • Advanced specialist knowledge in chemical pathology
  • Experience & involvement in UKAS inspection visit & preparation
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of specialist laboratory investigations for inborn errors of metabolism
  • Experience of working with paediatric samples
  • Supervisory experience
