SEMH Teaching Assistant – Full-Time Role in Levenshulme

Teaching Personnel is seeking a Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) Teaching Assistant to join an Ofsted-rated ‘Good’ secondary school in Levenshulme. This full-time position is available immediately and will continue until the end of the academic year, with the potential for a permanent role depending on performance.

Role Overview

This role is ideal for individuals passionate about supporting students with social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) needs. The successful candidate will work closely with students who require additional emotional and behavioural support, helping them engage positively in their education and personal development.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Providing one-to-one and small group support to students with SEMH needs, helping them to manage emotions and develop positive coping strategies.
  • Assisting students in mainstream classes, adapting learning approaches to suit individual needs and ensuring inclusion.
  • Building strong, trusting relationships with students to support their well-being and engagement in learning.
  • Working closely with teachers and pastoral staff to implement behaviour management strategies and personalised support plans.
  • Encouraging students to develop resilience, confidence, and social skills in and out of the classroom.
  • Helping to maintain a calm and supportive learning environment, assisting with de-escalation techniques when needed.
  • Monitoring student progress and providing feedback to the school’s SENCO (Special Educational Needs Coordinator) and other relevant staff.
  • Supporting students with self-regulation and providing strategies to help them overcome barriers to learning.
  • Promoting mental well-being and offering guidance on managing stress, anxiety, and emotions in a school setting.

Candidate Requirements:

  • A strong interest in working with students with social, emotional, and mental health needs.
  • Previous experience in a similar role (e.g., teaching assistant, youth worker, mentor, support worker) is desirable but not essential.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills, with the ability to offer patience, empathy, and understanding.
  • A proactive approach to supporting students, ensuring they feel safe, valued, and encouraged in their learning.
  • The ability to work effectively as part of a team and adapt to the needs of individual students.
  • A willingness to undergo training and professional development in SEMH support strategies.

Salary & Benefits:

  • Weekly pay between £419.25 - £500, depending on experience and responsibilities.
