The Estates Department at University Hospitals Plymouth are looking to recruit 2 x Band 2 General Maintenance Assistants to undertake a wide range of basic maintenance tasks across the Trust’s properties.

An enthusiastic attitude and willingness to help others is more important than previous demonstrable engineering or healthcare experience.

Successful applicants will need to have a flexible approach to work, be physically fit and turn their hand to assisting with various maintenance/housekeeping tasks across all engineering and building disciplines. The workload will be varied but there will be a requirement to undertake some repetitive tasks such as temperature testing and maintaining plant room cleanliness.

Main duties of the job

Primarily to support the Estates Engineering department with mechanical & electrical safety compliance work. Also, to assist in undertaking engineering and building maintenance, repairs and minor improvements across the Trust as directed by supervisor/line manager, ensuring compliance with Trust safety standards and procedures.

***Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as ‘Priority’ and 'At Risk' status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who are able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.***

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

PRIMARY DUTIES & AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

Operational Engineering Service (as required).
  • Electrical duties – Carry out minor electrical duties as instructed by team leaders, e.g. rewire plugs, change light bulbs, check condition of wiring and carry out shade cleaning etc. assist Craftsmen when required.
  • Mechanical duties - Undertake water safety & compliance duties including recording tap temperatures, undertake outlet flushing and disinfection, change tap washers, assist in unblocking of drains and toilets change filters on air handling units. Assist Craftsmen when required.
  • Building / Carpentry duties – carry out minor carpentry duties e.g. replace ceiling tiles, painting, plastering, repairs to skirting boards, flooring and fitting digi- locks
  • Boiler Work – clean inside if boilers for insurance inspections as instructed (confined space working)
  • VIE Plant – carry out defrosting of VIE evaporators and check plant for leaks.
  • Domestic Water System Maintenance (HSE L8 & HTM 04 Compliance) – Assist in
  • Thermostatic Mixer Valve Maintenance and Disinfection
  • Tank Cleaning
  • Calorifier Cleaning
  • Tap & Shower Outlet Cleaning and Disinfection
  • Take and Record Water Outlet Temperatures, report findings to Maintenance Operations Manager if outside of parameters
  • Ventilation System Maintenance (HTM 03 Compliance) – Assist in
  • AHU Cleaning (Internal & External) & Disinfection
  • Duct Cleaning
  • Grille Cleaning
  • Utility Meter Readings - after training & instruction, carry out meter readings for electric, water & gas on a monthly basis.
  • Assist Craftsperson - provide assistance to craftsperson’s through full range of Electrical, Mechanical and Building duties where applicable.
  • Plant Room & Workshop Duties – be responsible for keeping the plant rooms clean and tidy, free of rubbish and trip hazards.
  • Undertake any duties which may arise and may reasonably be deemed to be within the scope of the post
  • Undertake training which the management requires that would enhance and develop the post holder

Person specification

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Basic demonstrable Engineering/Building maintenance experience in an industrial/commercial environment or other related demonstrable experience with transferable skills.
Desirable criteria
  • Proven knowledge of electrical and/or mechanical systems
  • Demonstrable experience of working in a hospital environment

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • GCSE qualification (Grades A-C/4-9) in English & Maths (or equivalent level of qualification) or equivalent demonstrable experience gained within a working environment.
Desirable criteria
  • First aid training
