Scope of work & the value you will add to our customers:
The Senior Operational Risk Manager reports into the Head of Operational Risk as part of the bank’s second line of defence Risk & Compliance team. The Risk & Compliance team provides advice, support, oversight and challenge to the business, maintaining a strong risk culture which is fully aligned to our purpose of being ‘Good Bankers and Good Citizens’.
The Senior Operational Risk Manager works with the Head of Operational Risk to oversee the development and embedding of the risk framework, working closely with other Risk & Compliance team members and first-line risk colleagues. The team are responsible for all aspects of the risk framework pertaining to operational risk, including policies, processes, risk tools, training and overall engagement and embedding.
The Senior Operational Risk Manager will engage with a broad range of senior stakeholders from across the bank acting as an advocate for effective and proportionate risk management and supporting risk-based decision making.
Role & Responsibilities:
Support and deputisation for the Head of Operational Risk in:
- Enhancing and embedding a comprehensive risk management framework across the bank
- Development of operational risk policies, standards and guidance supported by effective rollout and training.
- Supporting colleagues in the application of the risk management framework to support the objectives and strategy of the bank.
- Ongoing review and enhancement of risk framework elements, including risk appetite, key risk indicators, risk event management, risk taxonomies and principles for the proportionate capture of risk and control information.
- Further developing the RCSA process to ensure accurate, complete, timely and meaningful insights can be reported through risk governance.
- Working closely with first line risk colleagues to support the application of risk management and collaborating on changes to the risk management framework.
- Engagement and oversight of other key risk related areas such as information security, business continuity and operational resilience.
- Supporting, overseeing and coordinating the resolution of key risk issues to improve the bank’s risk profile.
- Developing and maintaining a credible suite of operational risk scenarios for the purposes of internal capital adequacy (ICAAP).
- Ensuring that operational risk management considerations become embedded in decision-making within change management and third-party due diligence processes.
- Developing and delivering an operational risk management training programme to support the embedding of risk awareness across the bank, including induction and subject-specific training.
- Representing the Risk & Compliance team in management fora and at formal risk governance meetings as required.
- Assessing the effectiveness of the GRC system in use at the bank and supporting with further implementations and enhancements.
- Creating an emerging risk process to highlight future risks to the bank and its objectives.
- Developing and authoring high-quality, insightful risk reports for the Board and Executive Committees.
- Performing risk ‘deep dives’ where required or requested by management in response to major risk events or in areas of heightened change and/or high risk.
- Working with other members of the Risk & Compliance team to oversee first line activity and application of the risk management framework through a defined second line oversight model.
- Supporting the development and delivery of the Risk & Compliance function’s strategy and objectives.
- Developing and maintaining a positive network of relationships across the bank.
Requirements
Mandatory Skills:
- At least 7 years’ experience in either a first- or second-line risk role within financial services.
- Exceptional interpersonal skills, being able to demonstrate a track record of collaboration, influence and challenge at all levels across a firm.
- Excellent working knowledge of all elements of the risk framework and experience in implementing risk framework changes.
- The ability to be proactive and work under own initiative to further the objectives of the team and the wider business.
- Ability to write high quality reports to governance bodies with good attention to detail and accuracy.
- Analytical skills to be able to review information and draw out the salient insights.
Desirable Skills:
- Knowledge and experience of a ‘risk-adjacent’ area such as Operational Resilience, Information Security, Data, Third Party Risk Management, ESG.
- Experience of working with risk management tools.
- Comfortable with delivering training and / or presenting to audiences of varying seniority and knowledge levels.
- Experience of developing and managing ICAAP operational risk scenarios.
