Mechanical Design Engineer Job Overview
My client are looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer to join the engineering team of a multi-national company that manufactures, distributes and installs covering systems for the haulage industry.
The purpose of the role is to support the more experienced engineering team in all aspects related to improving existing design, and developing new products for UK and EU markets, while ensuring safety compliance and cost-effective design.
The company's engineering roles are wide ranging, encompassing issues relating to product compliance, the accuracy of technical documentation and drawings, sales support services, maintenance and improvement of inventory control and product manufacturing via the ERP software.
This role will be predominately based in Rochester Kent, although occasional travel to all UK locations and customer / supplier premises may be required.
Responsibilities include:
- Supporting the conversion and development of existing technical information for the UK product range into the ERP system.
- Working closely with colleagues across the company to maintain both organisational and legislative compliance.
- To work closely with operations across three sites, to understand the product requirements, production methods and key transactional processes etc. Identify and report problems with specific processes or products to the management team.
- Support the sales team with technical backup, customer specific modelling and warranty reviews.
- Take part in investigating and undertake analysis on how to improve existing projects and components.
- Modify existing designs of systems, research new methods and processes of manufacturing parts to drive the quality, efficiency and save cost.
- Determine mechanical application and requirements of new parts and products. Design aesthetics, materials, and functionality of those components. Ensure all safety standards of design are meet under guidance of Engineering Manager.
- Develop installation layouts for system installations in 2D using AutoCAD software;
- To support the development and introduction of new parts and products by creating manufacturing drawings and aiding the drafting process of owner's manuals and installation instructions.
- To create CAD drawings for technical documentation of existing and new products.
- To help gather and process necessary information for the certification procedure of key components requiring CE & UKCA compliance.
- To compile bill of material tables and associated data for a list of products.
- To ensure data is accurate & kept within company standards.
- To develop costings based on purchased material costs as well as engineered assemblies.
- Experience/familiarity operating directly in Operational/Manufacturing/Engineering environments.
- Degree or HND qualification in Mechanical Engineering or related technical discipline.
- Ideally some experience with working in an ERP package.
- Familiar with Bill of Material concepts and product costing methods.
- Able to work with IT systems, proficient with Microsoft Office package.
- Comfortable developing written instructions/part descriptions for new products.
- Numerate, with a level of engineering training.
- Trained in the use of CAD and CAM software such as AutoCAD and SolidWorks to generate documentation of parts, assemblies, and manufacturing drawings.
- Good communicator, able to work with people and build positive working relationships.
- Full UK Driving license.
- £35,000- £40,000 DOE
- 21 days holiday, rising with length of service to 25
