A well-regarded secondary school in the north of Portsmouth is seeking a Learning Support Assistant to join their team. This is a full-time role, working Monday to Friday from 8:00 to 16:00 during term time only, allowing for a great work-life balance with school holidays off.

As a Learning Support Assistant, you will play a key role in helping students with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) overcome barriers to learning. The objectives of this role vary according to the specific needs of each student, encompassing academic, personal, and behavioural support.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide one-to-one or small group support to pupils, tailoring your approach to meet their individual needs.
  • Assist students in accessing the curriculum and achieving their learning objectives.
  • Support the classroom teacher by helping to create an inclusive learning environment.
  • Foster a positive and supportive relationship with students to build trust and confidence.
  • Encourage the development of independent learning and social skills.
  • Monitor and record progress, reporting back to teaching staff and contributing to planning and assessments.
  • Assist with classroom management, ensuring a calm and focused learning environment.
  • Support students with behavioural, emotional, and social development needs.
  • Help to implement and follow strategies outlined in Individual Education Plans (IEPs) or Educational Health Care Plans (EHCPs).
  • Promote and safeguard the welfare of children and young people at all times.

  • Be enthusiastic, patient, and empathetic, with a passion for supporting young people.
  • Demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Be flexible and adaptable, able to respond to the changing needs of students and staff.
  • Have the ability to build positive relationships with students, staff, and parents.
  • Work effectively as part of a team and independently when required.
  • Be proactive and committed to creating a supportive learning environment.
  • Have experience working with SEND students is desirable but not essential.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
