Based at Bradford Royal Infirmary

We are excited to invite applications for the position of Histopathology Advanced Biomedical Scientist, with additional responsibilities for Health and Safety. This position is within the senior laboratory team at our Bradford site.

The candidate will be an enthusiastic HCPC-registered Biomedical Scientist with IBMS Specialist Portfolio, and a post-graduate qualification conducive with FIBMS, for example, MSc. Experience of specialist areas of Histopathology, and supervisory or staff management experience is desirable.

The successful candidate will work closely with the Section Manager of the service to manage the team and organise the laboratory, ensuring an efficient, high-quality and safe service. As this is an Advanced Biomedical Scientist role, it has additional duties attached overseeing Health and Safety of the laboratory.

Demonstrable competencies in the dissection area of the Histopathology laboratory is desirable.

Candidates will need to have a ‘can-do’ attitude, be enthusiastic, well-motivated and innovative, with good organisational abilities. This should be supported by well-developed interpersonal and communication skills and an ability to support individual and team working.

Main duties of the job

Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is a large acute teaching hospital, and the Histology workload is complex and specialist reflecting this. Bradford has a dissection laboratory which serves to support the Trust Consultant Histopathologists in dissection, with onward processing of specimens being prepared on the Airedale site laboratory.

The Bradford laboratory is part of Integrated Pathology Solutions LLP (IPS), which is a joint venture providing a high-quality pathology service to Airedale NHS Foundation Trust (ANHSFT), Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (BTHFT) and Harrogate District NHS Foundation Trust (HDFT).

Whilst the role is based at the Bradford site, the successful candidate will be employed by Airedale NHS Foundation Trust as part of the joint venture arrangements. Occasional travel to other IPS sites will be required at times, in fulfilment of the role.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Biomedical Science degree or equivalent qualification
  • HCPC registration as Biomedical Scientist
  • IBMS Specialist Portfolio in Histopathology or equivalent qualification or experience that evidences work at equivalent level
  • Relevant post graduate qualification conducive with Fellowship of the Institute of Biomedical Science Status (MSc)
Desirable criteria
  • Membership of profession body such as IBMS
  • Holds a General Management Qualification

  • Significant discipline specific experience and knowledge
  • Experience of working within a Histopathology laboratory
  • Evidence of Continuous Profession Development
  • Experience of Pathology IT systems
  • Experience of Pathology Quality management systems
  • Experience of training junior staff

  • Experience of writing/ reviewing SOPs in line with local or national guidelines
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of other specialist areas within Histopathology
  • Human Resource management experience and skills
