Job overview

We are looking to recruit a Health & Safety Coordinator with a friendly and positive 'can do' attitude to join our Building, Engineering & Maintenance (BEM) Team, who can work autonomously to achieve effective working relationships to facilitate the implementation of Health & Safety standards.

You will support and advise the BEM Team on all aspects of operational Health & Safety at work in line with current regulations, legislation (including CUH policies and procedures), strategic objectives, priorities and target plans.

Main duties of the job

You will be responsible for the smooth coordination of specific tasks, plans and project management as designated by the Health & Safety department as well as tasks and projects that have been generated by the Estates Senior Management.

Review and contribute to the BEM Departments Health & Safety processes in alignment with the Trust Health & Safety policies, procedures and guidance, in keeping with best practice, and make recommendations on their implementation and application.

Monitor and report compliance on all Health & Safety training and ensure training records are maintained for all the BEM staff.

Follow up with the responsible staff to review incident reports for the BEM Department on Datix, and where relevant gather and secure any other supporting evidence, some of which could be complex.

Provide monthly Health & Safety reports including accidents and near misses to the Associate Director of Building, Engineering & Maintenance.

Ensure workplace inspections are carried out in time and the recommended actions are completed within the target date.

Establish a full programme of documented Health & Safety inspections, audits and checks for the department.

Support the responsible managers / engineers to develop, communicate, implement and monitor effective Risk Assessments and associated action plans.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Health & Safety or equivalent experience.
  • Evidence of continuous professional development
Desirable criteria
  • NEBOSH Diploma in Occupational Health & Safety.
  • HND in Safety Engineering or similar.
  • Member of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health or similar.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrable substantive recent and relevant experience in a similar role.
  • Working knowledge and experience of using MS Office packages and health & safety software systems.
  • Health & Safety Audits and Inspections.
Desirable criteria
  • Previous experience of working in a similar role in healthcare Estates & Facilities sector.
  • Experience in delivering health and safety training.

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Good working knowledge of operational Health & Safety including but not limited to H&S policies, legislation, regulations, risk assessments, COSHH and inspections.
  • Knowledge of relevant laws & regulations.
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of writing policies and procedure.

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Ability to organise workload effectively, to prioritise and progress complex matters in a logical and systematic way.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to influence and build relationships.
