Job overview

The post holder will be responsible for carrying out immunisations/vaccinations, venepuncture, pre-placement screenings, DSE assessments and any other activities for which they are competent. The role will also involve health promotion and delivery of events/activities in line with the Trust Health and Wellbeing strategy.

The post holder will also be required to work off-site providing services to external clients.

Main duties of the job
  • Contributes to the audit of department procedures and standards
  • Undertake vaccinations in accordance with Departmental policies and maintain the cold chain at all times
  • Possess the clinical skills to undertake clinics including: immunisations, audiometric tests, driver assessments, lung function tests and other specialist screening procedures
  • Undertake pre-employment screening, health mot’s and health surveillance and low-level management referrals, providing advice and information to staff ensuring consistent best practice to promote good health and prevent work-related ill health
  • Undertake Display Screen Equipment (DSE) assessments where work related health problems have been reported and write clear reports on findings to managers and associated interested parties

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • First Level Nurse
  • NMC Registered
Desirable criteria
  • Willingness to work towards a specialist qualification in occupational health

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of current topical professional issues in the NHS
  • Post registration experience
Desirable criteria
  • Occupational Health or Practice Nurse experience (or similar)
  • Previous experience in pre-employment screenings
  • Previous experience in DSE assessments
  • Previous experience in health promotion.
  • Previous knowledge of OH&S legislation.

Communication skills

Essential criteria
  • Fully adaptable with different methods of communication, such as face to face contact, telephone contact, e-mail

Physical Skills

Essential criteria
  • Competent in and able to accurately input and extract data from Microsoft Office , i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint
  • Required to sit in one position for extended periods when undertaking DSE work, i.e. writing reports

Mental Effort

Essential criteria
  • Ability to deal with frequent, unpredictable, telephone enquiries and ‘walk-ins’
  • Able to deal with occasional telephone enquiries by distressed or aggressive individuals

Other

Essential criteria
  • Ability to drive and have access to own vehicle in order to attend external clinics and will be carrying contamination equipment / bodily fluids
  • Should have a flexible approach to working hours/days

Knowledge & Skills

Essential criteria
  • Able to manage stock levels of drugs, sundries and medical equipment
  • Understanding of issues of confidentiality related to nursing practice
  • Evidence of continued professional development
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in venepuncture
  • Relevant training on Immunisation and Vaccination procedures
  • Experience in audiometry
  • Experience in spirometry
  • Experience in Keystone vision screening
  • Experience in report writing

Personal Qualities

Essential criteria
  • Must be honest, trustworthy and confidential in all working practices
  • Be flexible in regards to working hours/days to meet the demands of the service
  • Be able to work as part of a team and autonomously
