Job overview

We are looking to appoint two Whole time Specialty Doctors in the Integrated Geriatric and Stroke Medicine directorate at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The successful candidates may be expected to work at both campuses in the Trust.

The posts are for commencement in August 2025 for two years duration. All posts will include an element of out of hours working. It is anticipated this will include contribution to the general internal medicine hospital out of hours rota. This will be discussed at the point of offer.

The directorate would be keen to support an appropriate candidate through the Speciality doctor role to Specialist or Consultant-level practice as appropriate.

Any candidate who is unable for personal reasons to work full-time will be eligible to be considered for the post; if such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis with the Trust in consultation with consultant colleagues.

Should any further vacancies arise shortlisted applicants will be considered.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidates would join one of the ward teams at either the Northern General or Royal Hallamshire hospitals. Some posts may move between wards and teams depending on the needs of the directorate at the time. The directorate would be keen to support an appropriate candidate through the Speciality doctor role to Specialist or Consultant-level practice as appropriate.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Medical Degree from a recognised UK or overseas university or institution
Desirable criteria
  • MD or PhD or equivalent
  • Fellowship or equivalent
  • Completion of MRCP
  • Completion of SCE in Geriatric Medicine
  • Completion of Diploma in Geriatric Medicine

Experience

Essential criteria
  • A minimum of 4 years full time postgraduate training (or equivalent gained on a part-time or flexible basis) since first obtaining registration, including adequate experience in a relevant specialty, or shall have equivalent experience and competencies.
  • Full registration with the General Medical Council with a licence to practice
  • Valid Advanced Life Support qualification (for posts with on call commitment)
  • Ability to make clinical prioritisation decisions
  • Recognition of, and ability to undertake the initial management of, an acutely ill patient
  • Recognition of common geriatric medicine presentations and experience of managing these
  • Experience of managing patients at the end of life including discussion of resuscitation and advanced care planning
Desirable criteria
  • Wider experience in different units
  • Experience in a relevant speciality training programme (IMT) or as a fixed term speciality trainee

Management and Clinical Governance

Essential criteria
  • Committed to and understands the principles of clinical governance
  • An understanding of the issues of clinical effectiveness and audit
  • Understands the principles outlined in the GMC document Good Medical Practice
  • Understands the requirements of Medical Appraisal and Revalidation
Desirable criteria
  • Documented completed audits during previous posts

Teaching

Essential criteria
  • Willingness and ability to teach undergraduate and postgraduate trainees
Desirable criteria
  • Training in teaching methods
  • Experience of designing and delivering and evaluating medical education sessions
  • Experience of teaching other health professionals

Personal attributes

Essential criteria
  • Good oral and written communication skills
