Due to the forthcoming retirement of the current post holder, we are excited to offer an opportunity for a clinical expert in Tissue Viability to join the OUH as a Consultant Nurse!

The Consultant Nurse in tissue viability, will work as an autonomous, consultant level practitioner, responsible for providing highly specialised nursing advice and support, to demonstrate the highest levels of clinical expertise in supporting and facilitating quality, individualised patient care, in collaboration with the multi-professional team.

The role will be structured around the four core functions of consultant practice (expert clinical practice, leadership, education and research), and provide strategic leadership and consultancy in relation to expert practice in tissue viability, harm reduction initiatives related to Hospital Acquired Pressure Ulcer (HAPU) prevention and management.

The role will be lead for the OUH Tissue Viability Services, and work in partnership with other local NHS organisations, integrated care system colleagues, independent contractors and other non-NHS organisations, to positively impact patient safety, quality, and reduce potential harm.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be an expert clinical practitioner delivering a comprehensive service to patients by employing a high degree of professional and personal autonomy to improve patient outcomes and experience in Tissue Viability. The role is expected to deliver clinical care for at least 50% of their job plan, with remaining time dedicated to leadership, education, training, quality improvement and research.

This role will be supported with access to supervision and CPD, a supportive forum network of Multi-Professional Consultant Practitioners, and a variety of senior, research active, leadership roles.

A PhD or Professional Doctorate relevant to an advanced/expert practice scope and the service area/speciality is desirable, but we will welcome applications from candidates with significant clinical expertise in tissue viability, who would be willing to transition to a Doctoral pathway of studies within 4 years from commencing in post.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The role will lead on the clinical and strategic direction for the tissue viability service and be a key member of the senior corporate nursing team, influencing organisational initiatives and quality improvement related to tissue viability and harm reduction.

The role will lead on the development and implementation of a research strategy within tissue viability to contribute towards improved patient pathways and harm reduction related to HAPU.

Essential criteria
  • Current Professional Nursing Registration with NMC
  • NMC Registered Independent/Supplementary Prescriber
  • MSc - in Advanced Practice or relevant specialism (Tissue Viability)
  • Completed PhD or Professional Doctorate; or willing to commence within 4 years
  • Education and Teaching qualification and experience
  • Leadership and Management qualification and experience
  • Significant, credible experience as an expert in Tissue Viability
  • Evidence of scholarship and publication relevant to Tissue Viability/Nursing
Desirable criteria
  • Completed PhD or Professional Doctorate
  • Evidence of successful applications for research Grant Income
  • Evidence of proven experience of working at a strategic level across the health community
  • Evidence of Quality Improvement (QI) with demonstrable impacts in clinical practice
  • Experience of interpreting a range of data, to produce high quality reports/presentations, with clear evidence-based recommendations for Executive Board/Lead Groups, for impact at local, provider or system level
