The post holder will manage staff in the paediatric non-invasive ventilation (NIV) service and the paediatric chronic respiratory team. They will act as the clinical lead for the service, and also as an advanced practitioner. They will take a lead role in the assessment and treatment of patients with highly complex conditions who either already use NIV or are new to using it.

They will advise the Therapy Lead with regards to service planning and business cases related to that area and play a major part in the governance and quality of service delivery in conjunction with the Paediatric Respiratory Leads and the Clinical Lead Physiotherapist.

The post holder will undertake a team lead role in planning, coordinating, delivering and evaluating the paediatric LTV and chronic respiratory physiotherapy service on a day-to-day basis. The post holder’s caseload will consist of patients on PICU, PHDU, PCCU, ward patients throughout ELCH, out-patient day cases and patients attending respiratory clinics (face to face and virtually).
The post-holder will practice clinically, undertaking work commensurate with their professional knowledge and expertise, as an advanced practitioner, this clinical work will be alongside the respiratory CNSs, the respiratory consultant group and medical team.
They will work in partnership with the other clinical physiotherapy leads and all members of the physiotherapy and paediatric teams, mainly the respiratory team to ensure continued development of the Trust through research and evidence-based practise.

The post holder will be expected to provide expert clinical advice and support both within hospital and to partner organisations. They will also represent the service externally, developing external links will be integral to this role.

§ To undertake the specialist respiratory assessment as an autonomous practitioner, carry out diagnostic procedures and interpret the results for paediatric patients with multifaceted respiratory problems on the LTV unit, ELCH wards, NICU, SCBU, PICU, PCCU and PHDU as appropriate including those patients with a complex presentation, using investigative and analytical skills.

§ To interpret and analyse clinical and non-clinical facts to form accurate diagnoses and prognoses in a wide range of highly complex conditions, to recommend the best course of intervention particularly LTV and long-term respiratory conditions and to develop comprehensive discharge plans.

§ To formulate, evaluate and reassess individualised physiotherapy management and / or treatment plans, using clinical reasoning skills and utilising a wide range of treatment skills and options in order to formulate a specialised programme of care.

§ To be involved in the ongoing development of the Paediatric non-invasive ventilation and LTV Service, jointly leading with medical colleagues in the assessment, implementation and monitoring of its use, as well as setting standards/guidelines and auditing their use.

§ To provide advice on specialised physiotherapy care and treatment for paediatric patients with respiratory problems based on theoretical knowledge and relevant practical experience, and to be consulted frequently for specialist advice and guidance by junior team members and other health care professionals both within and outside the trust

§ To demonstrate a sound understanding of clinical governance, clinical risk and to demonstrate the use of treatment plans with an evidence-based link.

§ To regularly participate in working parties developing policy changes within paediatric and respiratory care and LTV which impact on all service users.

§ To ensure, as team leader, that designated staff implement policy and service developmental changes

§ To propose policy changes concerning the physiotherapy management of paediatric respiratory and LTV patients and to guide the paediatric physiotherapy team to provide an efficient and effective service in this clinical area.

§ To work with the Respiratory Consultants, Clinical Specialist Resp PT/Clinical Lead, Specialist Respiratory Nursing Staff, Lead Paediatric Physiotherapist and Head of Physiotherapy in developing the strategic and operational management of the physiotherapy service.
