The post is a one-year fixed term contract, with a opportunity for the post to be substantive. It will be based at the Great Western Hospital Swindon (GWH).

This role is a new within the department of oncology to increase the provision of support and management of patients with malignancies.; the appointed candidate will join an existing team of 10 oncology medical staff including consultants, SAS doctors and specialist trainees.

On joining the department, you will become part of a well-established, friendly team and will help us continue to drive forward improvements in the service that we provide to our patients. The role will include weekly MDT meetings, clinics and contribution to the acute oncology service.

Oncology patients are managed and supported within strong multidisciplinary teams with clinical oncology support from Oxford University Hospitals. The acute oncology service (AOS) runs an in-reach service to support inpatients of which the appointed candidate will have an important role in continuing to shape the service.

All tumour sites have experienced clinical nurse specialists some of whom have extended roles e.g. treatment monitoring clinics, endocrine treatment workshops etc. There are a number of patient pathway facilitators across the tumour sites who work collaboratively to improve the patient journey and experience.

he Great Western Hospital, Swindon is a large, busy, modern district general hospital situated on a green field site near junction 15 of the M4 between the Marlborough Downs, the Ridgeway and the Vale of the White Horse. The population served by the Diabetes and Endocrine Department extends between Oxfordshire, Wiltshire, Gloucestershire and Berkshire, a population of approximately 350,000.

As a senior member of the team, you will become a key part in the delivery of training and supervision to our junior medical and nursing colleagues from oncology and other hospital subspecialties as well as allied health care professionals

The oncology department is located within the main building of the Great Western Hospital. Outpatient clinics and our 2 Day Therapy areas are co-located, with flexibility around clinics including virtual templates encouraged. In 2023 the trust has seen a brand-new state of the art radiotherapy centre, run by neighbouring Oxford University Hospital Trust.

This enables Swindon’s patients to access radiotherapy and specialist services closer to home. The cancer services within the trust operate within the Thames Valley Cancer Alliance.

The post holder will be supported by a share of onsite experienced oncology secretarial support and have access to a laptop/desk area and IT support for all systems used within the trust.
