Job overview

Are you a motivated doctor seeking experience of inner-city emergency medicine at ST1-2 level who wants to join the ‘top trust to work at in England’ as rated in the NHS staff survey? If so, we want your contribution to our dedicated, friendly, team.

Our junior clinical fellows come from a broad range of backgrounds but are typically looking to gain further experience in emergency medicine, taking time out between the foundation programme and specialty training.

We support this with a rota that has 20% of time allocated as non-clinical professional development days to work towards your career goals. These days can be used for teaching, audit, research, quality improvement, exam revision, or personal study.

We are offering a fixed term appointment, starting in August 2025, initially for 12 months but with potential to extend.

You must have (essential):
  • Eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment and hold a current licence to practise;
  • At least three months’ experience in emergency medicine gained within the NHS; Equivalent overseas experience will be considered if gained within a recognised emergency medicine training programme.
  • At least two years’ post-graduation clinical experience;
  • Up-to-date certification in ALS or ACLS; Must be gained by attending an accredited face-to-face course. Online only courses are not accepted.

Candidates not fulfilling these essential criteria will not be shortlisted for interview.

Main duties of the job

Clinical Duties
  • To see patients in all areas of the ED, as requested by the Consultant or Registrar in charge
  • To participate in the major incident procedure.
  • To engage in ED performance development
  • To be engaged in WBA and yearly appraisal

The Junior Clinical Fellow tier has sixteen doctors who work on a rolling rota, split into 80% clinical ‘shop floor’ shifts and 20% non-clinical professional development days, averaging 42.7 hours per week. There are two weeks of night shifts in a 16 week rota cycle, split into three or four night blocks, and also seven weekends worked per 16 week cycle.

Professional development days can be used for teaching, audit, research, quality improvement work, exam revision, personal study, or any other appropriate activity agreed with your consultant supervisor. The department has a strong record in junior fellows submitting abstracts, posters and oral presentations to national and international conferences as a result of their quality improvement work.
