Job overview

The Associate Director of Nursing is a key member of the site Nursing Board, working with the Divisional Director and Director of Nursing to develop and implement the trust wide objectives to deliver evidence based standards and to improve the care and experience of our patients.

The post holder is responsible for assuring professional standards and practice in all aspects of nursing /midwifery and AHP's practice are achieved within their divisions, including the adherence to statutory regulations. It is also expected the post holder will undertake a corporate role as required by the executive, chief nurse and the director of operations.

Main duties of the job

We require a highly inspirational, influential, and strong clinical leader to take on the role of associate director of nursing for the Surgery and Cancer division at Newham Hospital. This division consists of theatres, surgical specialties and a brand new state-of-the-art ITU, making it an exciting time to join the Division.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • First Level Registered Nurse/Midwife
  • Evidence of Post Graduate education in specialty field
  • Evidence of ongoing, relevant postgraduate education
  • Masters level education MSc in a relevant healthcare subject
  • Management Qualification
  • Teaching/mentoring qualification
Desirable criteria
  • Coaching and Mentoring PGCE

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant experience of working in a senior nursing role
  • Ability to analyse complex problems and workable solutions to address them
  • Take action based on own interpretation of broad clinical and professional policies, ability to advise divisional and site management teams on how these can be implemented.
  • Ability to think and plan strategically, tactically and creatively and to prioritise work programs in the face of competing demands
  • Ability to act with autonomy and freedom to act in decision making across the division, with collaboration within the divisional team and escalation to the Hospital Management team as necessary
  • Ability to manage and deliver to deadlines & within resources.
  • Significant experience in the supervision of staff and students including HR issues
  • Significant experience of audit in evaluating and developing services
  • Manager on call
  • Change and quality improvement management experience
  • Significant experience of close multiprofessional working in an in- patient environment
  • Significant experience of managing a budget and of managing budget holders.
  • Experience of teaching undergraduates and post graduate students
  • Significant experience of working autonomously to lead a professional nursing group
  • Significant experience of transformational change and use of quality improvement initiatives to improve practice and service
  • Evidence of managerial responsibilities & operational healthcare experience in an acute setting

  • Broad breadth related to above skills and managerial and leadership experience

  • Good computer skills including presentation, data manipulation and spreadsheets
