Job overview

The Palliative Care service at Barts Health NHS Trust, are currently welcoming applications for a locum consultant in palliativecare (twelve month maternity cover). The successful candidate with be based at both St Bartholomews & Whipps Cross Hospitals.

Barts Health NHS Trust provides a large range of clinical services to people in east London and beyond. We operate from four major hospital sites (The Royal London, St Bartholomew’s, Whipps Cross and Newham) and a number of community locations, including Mile End Hospital.

Around 2.5 million people living in east London look to our services to provide them with the healthcare they need.

Specialist Palliative Care is provided at all hospitals within Barts Health NHS Trust. Hospital Palliative Care at St. Bartholomew’s, The Royal London, Newham and Whipps Cross Hospitals are managed as a networked service from the St. Bartholomew’s site through the Barts Cancer Centre.

These sites do not provide community or hospice services.

Main duties of the job

To be an active member of the Specialist Palliative Care Service and help deliver the departmental mission of excellence in clinical care and teaching.

To contribute to the provision of a comprehensive, efficient and high quality evidence-based Specialist Palliative Care service including all administrative duties associated with patient care.

To provide clinical care for patients who have been referred to Specialist Palliative Care service, including inpatients and outpatients, providing specialist advice and a referral service for other clinicians in the Trust.

To be responsible for Clinical Audit activities, which is an essential and regular part of clinical practice.

To participate in the Trust’s clinical governance activities, and to encourage and foster improvements in the quality and standards of clinical services.

To provide clinical leadership in Specialist Palliative and End of Life Care within Barts Health NHS Trust.

To be involved with the education all members of the multi professional team both formally and informally including undergraduates.

To share in the responsibility for the professional management of doctors in training.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To contribute to the provision of comprehensive, efficient and high-quality care throughout the treatment and management pathway of patients with Specialist Palliative Care needs.

To help co-ordinate the provision of a consolidated service across all sites in the Trust.

To undertake administrative duties associated with the care of patients in their charge and the running of their clinics or departments.

To participate in the consultant on-call rota and provide cover for colleagues in time of absence and leave when required.

To have a key role in providing a high-quality clinical service for patients with palliative care needs, developing and establishing models of delivering specialist palliative care advice

To contribute to locality, network and national workforce streams or councils.

To maintain up-to-date specialist knowledge and provide evidence based care for all patients.

To attend Specialist Palliative Care multidisciplinary team meetings and share in attendance at other cancer and relevant nonmalignant MDMs.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Full and specialist registration (with a licence to practice) with the General Medical Council (GMC) (or be eligible for registration/ or entry into the specialist register within 6 months of the interview)
  • Applicants will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the CCT
  • CESR
  • MRCP/ FRCP or evidence of equivalent qualification and/or experience
Desirable criteria
  • Higher research degree (MD, PhD, MD (Res))
  • Accredited Educational Supervisor
  • Other qualifications which might enhance the provision of the service e.g. Teaching qualification, management qualification

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Have experience in the management of resources
  • Evidence of experience in Specialist Palliative Care in different settings
  • Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a range of problems
  • Experience of teaching a variety of styles and to various audiences
  • Able to take responsibility of service without direct supervision
Desirable criteria
  • Excellent publication record

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of board based knowledge and experience in specialised palliative care in different settings.

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of leadership
  • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team and with colleagues at different locations
  • Good oral and written communications skills
  • Ability to relate to colleagues and other professionals and communicate between specialities and disciplines
  • Ability to build and support a team
  • Broad range of IT skills
  • Evidence of experience in teaching and clinical/educational supervision

Other

Essential criteria
  • Other qualifications which might enhance the provision of the service e.g. Teaching qualification, management qualification and family members and all the members of the multi-disciplinary team
  • Good knowledge of, and the ability to use, spoken and written English
  • Ability to work across sites
  • Participate in the on-call rota
  • Sufficient to perform the duties of the post with any aids and adaptations
  • Ability to present effectively to an audience, using a variety of methods to respond to questions and queries
