The appointment is within the Neurology and Rehab Medicine Services at North Bristol NHS Trust. This is a replacement post. Candidates with relevant CCT in Neurology or Rehabilitation Medicine would be considered for this post.

The Department: The department of Rehabilitation Medicine supports:-

  1. The Bristol Centre for Re-enablement (BCE) which comprises services including prosthetics, orthotics, special seating and environmental controls.
  2. The Major Trauma and Neurology services at Southmead Hospital providing consultant support to the Hyper-acute rehabilitation team, review of complex patients within the hospital, as well as providing general rehabilitation and spasticity (including ITB) management clinics.

Main duties of the job

Communications and Relationships:

The post holder will be expected to have excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues. The post holder will be empathetic and sensitive to patients needs and able to explain things clearly – particularly complex or sensitive information.

Responsibility for Patient Care:

The post holder will have continuing responsibility for the care of patients in his or her charge and for the proper functioning of the service and will undertake the administrative duties associated with the care of patients and the running of the clinical department.

Responsibility for People Management:

The Post Holder will be expected to provide compassionate leadership to their clinical teams. This may include multi-agency teams within Primary and Secondary Care. They will be responsible for the supervision of junior staff within their team and will lead by example and with compassion.

Teaching and Supervision of Junior Medical Staff & Students:

We aim to support the development of all our doctors, whilst maintain an environment where patient and staff safety is paramount. A key element of that is ensuring high quality clinical and educational supervision.

Partnership working:

The post holder will be required to work in partnership with colleagues of all disciplines, external stakeholders and service users, to ensure the creation of a quality service.

  2. The Major Trauma and Neurology services at Southmead Hospital providing consultant support to the Hyper-acute rehabilitation team, review of complex patients within the hospital, as well as providing general rehabilitation and spasticity (including ITB) management clinics.

Key working relationships:
Internal: The Rehab medicine team and other medical and non-medical departments.
External: Primary care, BNSSG ICB, UHBW, Frenchay Neurological Rehabilitation Unit and other local organisations
Responsibility for Patient Care:

Responsibility for financial / physical resources and policies:
The post holder will be expected to adhere to Trust policy and procedures as well as contributing to policy and service development. The post holder should have enough understanding of NHS financial management in order to provide the best service possible.

They will minimise waste, improve services, and promote effective use of resources available.

The Post holder should understand the roles and policies of local and where relevant national agencies involved in healthcare.
Responsibility for People Management:
The Post Holder will be expected to provide compassionate leadership to their clinical teams. This may include multi-agency teams within Primary and Secondary Care. They will be responsible for the supervision of junior staff within their team and will lead by example and with compassion.
Teaching and Supervision of Junior Medical Staff & Students:
We aim to support the development of all our doctors, whilst maintain an environment where patient and staff safety is paramount. A key element of that is ensuring high quality clinical and educational supervision. The postholder will be responsible for the professional supervision and management of junior medical staff.

Where appropriate, the postholder will be named in the educational contract of junior staff as the person responsible for overseeing their training and as an initial source of advice to such doctors regarding their careers. Time will be allocated within job plans to support this activity.

Currently there is one Specialist Registrar in Rehabilitation Medicine within the Severn Deanery who rotates between the North Bristol NHS Trust, the Frenchay Brain Injury Unit, the Bristol Centre for
Enablement and the Cardiff Spinal Injuries Unit.
Medical students continually rotate through the Trust and will expect to attend Rehabilitation Outpatient Clinics as part of their Neurology placement.
Research and Development:
At NBT we have a well-established Quality Improvement programme and the post holder will contribute to this. There are also opportunities for clinical audits both locally and nationally the post holder will support more junior staff with this activity.
The Major Trauma team has a strong ethos of QIPs and audit. The post holder will be expected to support staff from all disciplines in their projects as well as undertaking personal audit projects as a requirement of appraisal and revalidation.

Trauma Audit and Research Network (TARN) database provides a very fruitful source of data!

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Applicants must be on the specialist register via the CCT or CESR route or eligible for specialist registration within 6 months of interview.
  • Maintain Full registration with the GMC
  • MRCP or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • Higher qualification e.g. Masters, MD, PhD
  • Rehabilitation publications.
  • Evidence of additional relevant training e.g. management and leadership.).

Training and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Recent experience and familiarity of UK hospital systems and practices (or equivalent).
  • Minimum of seven years postgraduate experience including higher surgical/medical training, three years as a Specialist Registrar in an approved training post, or equivalent. Part of this period may be in a post of equivalent responsibility and training potential. Broad and full training in the prognostication and management of disabling conditions.
  • Knowledge of contemporary NHS management issues.
  • Clinical Governance principles
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in involvement in service redesign
  • Evidence of leadership development programme committed to quality improvement during training

Further training, Management, Audit

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of recent CME/ reasonable training progression at this stage of career.
  • Experience in audit | projects and written up.

  • Completion of a general management course or programme.

Research, teaching, publications

  • Proven teaching ability
  • Willingness to undertake teaching of medical under-graduates & postgraduates.
Desirable criteria
  • Rehabilitation focused publications in peer reviewed journals and presentations at regional | national meetings
  • Record in research.
  • Demonstration of involvement in clinical directorate management
