Lead Teacher of Mathematics

(Full time)

Salary: EMS Main Scale + Responsibility Point 3

Exeter Mathematics School is a 6th form on a mission to raise the aspirations and achievements of mathematically able young people in the South West of England. The school is a vibrant and inclusive learning community in which students' needs are at the centre and everyone is valued equally: students, teachers, pastoral workers, administrators, leaders, parents and governors each have a voice and a crucial contribution to make.

To fulfil our mission, we spend a significant proportion of our time focusing on outreach activities and events. All teachers contribute towards these programmes (both in person and online) which often take place after school, sometimes on Saturdays and occasionally in the school holidays.

Within EMS, students experience high levels of challenge coupled with thoughtful support and guidance, working in an atmosphere that fosters creative and rigorous thinking, encourages enquiry, engenders confidence in problem solving and sustains joy in learning.
In addition to Mathematics and Further Mathematics, the vast majority of students elect to study Physics and large numbers study Computer Science. They also embark on ambitious projects to prepare them for independent study at university and are able to access the curriculum and resources of Exeter College.

Teachers from all curriculum areas work closely with one another to enrich and integrate the curriculum. We have an unflinching focus on preparing students for their next steps, whether that be university study, a degree apprenticeship or employment – we want our students to thrive.

We are seeking to appoint an inspirational, highly-qualified, innovative and reflective teacher to lead the Mathematics Team. You must be committed to developing pedagogy and collaborative working and be able to challenge, stretch and support the most able students as they prepare to study mathematics-related degrees at top universities.

A determination to make a positive difference to students is essential, as is a commitment to personifying the School’s values and supporting the team whilst they strive to excel.

EMS is a small school, catering for just 128 students. You will be one of only 13 teachers in the school, nine of which teach Mathematics. Over the past 10 years we’ve created and adapted the curriculum offer and developed our pedagogical understanding.

Although we will continue to tweak for years to come and are open to meaningful change, a seismic shift in approach is not required.

You’ll be joining the school at an interesting time: more Maths Schools have now opened, making rich collaboration possible and the school is hoping to expand in the near future. We are continually developing our outreach programme and currently have a focus on measuring the impact of programmes to be sure we make the best possible use of our limited resources.

You’ll have a significant role in developing the vision for Maths outreach and implementing its delivery across the School’s catchment area.

Further information about the school, additional information for prospective applicants and an application form can be found on our website: www.exetermathematicsschool.ac.uk/work-with-us/. We’re quite an unusual school so we highly recommend that you take some time to review this information and read the person specification and job description prior to applying.

If you would like more information or the opportunity to discuss this post or visit the school, please get in touch by either emailing jobs@exeterms.ac.uk or ringing 01392 429020 and asking to speak to Kerry.

EMS is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of young people and expects all staff to share this commitment. All appointments are subject to satisfactory DBS checks, together with the receipt of references.
